Front Idler and Recoil Spring - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the rubber track. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Remove and
Install".

1. Pull the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) partially out of the undercarriage frame.
Attach a suitable lifting device to the front idler. Pull the front idler and recoil spring
assembly out of the undercarriage frame until the recoil spring is exposed.
2. Reposition the lifting device to the front idler and the recoil spring assembly. Remove the
front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) from the undercarriage frame. The weight of the
unit is approximately 81 kg (179 lb).

3. Position the front idler and recoil spring assembly horizontally. Block the unit in position in
order to keep the unit from falling. Attach a suitable lifting device to recoil spring (2).
Remove four bolts (3) and separate recoil spring (2) from front idler (4). The weight of the
recoil spring is approximately 27 kg (60 lb). The weight of the front idler is approximately
54 kg (120 lb).

Front Idler and Recoil Spring - Install
SMCS - 4158-012; 4159-012
Installation Procedure
1. Prior to assembly, ensure that the mating surfaces of the front idler bearings and of the
recoil spring assembly are clean and free of dirt and debris.

2. Attach a suitable lifting device to recoil spring assembly (2). The weight of the recoil spring
assembly is approximately 27 kg (60 lb). Position the recoil spring assembly against the
bearings on front idler (4) and install four bolts (3).

3. Attach a suitable lifting device to the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1). The weight
of the front idler and recoil spring assembly is approximately 81 kg (179 lb). Put the front
idler of the unit partially into the undercarriage frame.

4. Use a pry bar to slide the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) into position in the
undercarriage frame.
End By:
a. Install the rubber track. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Remove and Install".

Start By:
a. Remove front idlers and recoil springs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idler
and Recoil Spring - Remove".
Note: Adjust the pump relief valve. To avoid damage or injury, the pressure should not
exceed 51366 kPa (7450 psi).

Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.
To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the
spring pressure.
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the recoil spring assembly.

3. Determine the position for the recoil spring assembly in Tooling (A). Locate adjustable
support (1) of Tooling (A) in this position. Level the adjustable support.
4. Measure the length of the recoil spring assembly. Adjust the space from reaction plate (2) to
movable plate (3) in order to fit the measured length.

5. Remove bolt (5) and lock plate (4) from the end of the retaining rod for the recoil spring
assembly.

6. Attach a suitable lifting device to recoil spring assembly (6). The weight of the recoil spring
assembly is approximately 24 kg (53 lb). Position the recoil spring assembly on adjustable
support (1) in Tooling (A). Align the centerline of the recoil spring assembly with the
centerline of Tooling (A) by moving the adjustable support.

7. Use the following procedure to position the recoil spring assembly in Tooling (A).
a. Level the recoil spring assembly by repositioning the adjustable support.
b. Position the recoil spring assembly so that nut (8) is centered in the hole of reaction
plate (2).
c. Install two pins (7) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown.
d. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between
reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3).
e. Be sure that the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered in Tooling (A).

8. Close covers (9) on Tooling (A). Operate Tooling (B) and slowly compress the recoil spring
assembly until the retaining rod and the nut are free to move.

9. Locate nut (8) through the opening in Tooling (A). Remove nut (8) and the washer from the
retaining rod. Use Tooling (B) and slowly release the force on the recoil spring assembly.
10. Open covers (9) on Tooling (A). Attach a suitable lifting device to the disassembled recoil
spring assembly. Remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A).

11. Separate the components of the recoil spring assembly. Remove retaining rod (13), support
assembly (12), and support (10) from recoil spring (11).

1. Check the condition of the threads on retaining rod (13) and nut (8). If the threads are
damaged, use new parts for replacement.

4. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely. Apply 4C-5592 Anti-Seize Compound to the
threads of the retaining rod. Install retaining rod (13) in support assembly (12). Install recoil
spring (11) on support assembly (12). Put support (10) in position on recoil spring (11).

5. Attach a suitable lifting device to the recoil spring assembly. Position the recoil spring
assembly in Tooling (A). The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately 24 kg
(53 lb). Use the following procedure to position the recoil spring assembly in Tooling (A).
a. Level the recoil spring assembly by repositioning the adjustable support (1).
b. Position the recoil spring assembly so that nut (8) and the washer can be installed
through the access hole in reaction plate (2).
c. Install two pins (7) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown.
d. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between
reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3).
e. Be sure that the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered in Tooling (A).
f. Remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly.

6. Close covers (9) on Tooling (A). Use the following procedure to adjust the preloaded length
of the recoil spring assembly.

a. Operate Tooling (B) and slowly compress the recoil spring assembly. Use the access
hole in reaction plate (2) and guide the end of the retaining rod into position in
support (10).
b. Open the covers on Tooling (A). Determine Dimension (X) by measuring the length
of recoil spring (11) and support (12). Dimension (X) must be 361 ± 1 mm
(14.21 ± 0.04 inch).
c. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is not correct, close covers (9) on
Tooling (A). Use Tooling (B) to adjust Dimension (X) to the correct length.
d. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is correct, assembly of the recoil spring
assembly can be completed.
e. Install the washer and nut (8). Be sure that all the threads in nut (8) are engaged with
threads on the retaining rod.
7. Operate Tooling (B) and release the pressure on the recoil spring assembly. Open the covers
on Tooling (A).

9. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound on the threads of bolt (5). Install lock plate (4) and
bolt (5) on the retaining rod. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 30 ± 7 N·m (22 ± 5 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the front idler and recoil spring assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Front Idler and Recoil Spring - Install".

1. Raise the side of the machine, and install Tooling (A) under the frame.
2. Remove the track roller that is located under the hydraulic track adjuster. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Track Roller - Remove and Install".

machines with rubber tracks.
3. Use a pry bar to move the front idler and recoil spring assembly forward approximately
152 mm (6.0 inch) in the undercarriage frame.
Note: The front track carrier roller has been removed to provide a better illustration of two
mounting bolts (1) that secure the hydraulic track adjuster to the vertical bulkhead in the
undercarriage frame.

4. Loosen, but do not remove bolts (1) that secure the hydraulic track adjuster to the
undercarriage frame. Access bolts (1) through the opening in the undercarriage frame below
the track carrier roller.

Pull the front idler and recoil spring assembly out of the undercarriage frame until the recoil spring is exposed. 2. Reposition the lifting device to the front idler and the recoil spring assembly. Remove the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) from the undercarriage frame. The weight of the unit is approximately 81 kg (179 lb). Illustration 3 g00551670 3. Position the front idler and recoil spring assembly horizontally. Block the unit in position in order to keep the unit from falling. Attach a suitable lifting device to recoil spring (2). The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately 24 kg (53 lb). Use the following procedure to position the recoil spring assembly in Tooling (A). a. Level the recoil spring assembly by repositioning the adjustable support (1). b. Position the recoil spring assembly so that nut (8) and the washer can be installed through the access hole in reaction plate (2). c. Install two pins (7) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown. d. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). e.   • 15. a. Operate Tooling (B) and slowly compress the recoil spring assembly. Use the access hole in reaction plate (2) and guide the end of the retaining rod into position in support (10). b. Open the covers on Tooling (A). Determine Dimension (X) by measuring the length of recoil spring (11) and support (12). Dimension (X) must be 361 ± 1 mm (14.21 ± 0.04 inch). c. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is not correct, close covers (9) on Tooling (A). Use Tooling (B) to adjust Dimension (X) to the correct length. d. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is correct, assembly of the recoil spring assembly can be completed. e. Install the washer and nut (8). Be sure that all the threads in nut (8) are engaged with threads on the retaining rod. 7. Operate Tooling (B) and release the pressure on the recoil spring assembly. Open the covers on Tooling (A).
