Editor's Notes
Start off the presentation:
Snap: “Guys OMG I’m here, this is my bucket list I’m speaking at Inman and you were with me from the beginning you watched me prepare and practice and now you’re here with me –thank you!”
Speaking on stage here today is a dream come true and this (show phone) is how I just shared my joy and excitement with a global community in real time
I just used Snapchat to share this epic moment with friends that I’ve never been in the same room with all over the world – they’ve watched my journey to this stage as I documented every step of the way through SNAPHCAT from the moment I found out I was invited to speak here to creating my slides to sharing my fears and doubts about speaking on stage and now, they just saw me complete this adventure.
How do you think that they feel watching this today – they feel invested – they feel like it’s their journey too.
It’s hard to believe that this iPhone didn’t exist 10 years ago and now we can’t imagine our lives without it.
it’s our literal lifeline to the world.
Over the last few years, thanks to apps like Snapchat (this phone) been completely transformed into a free branding platform with a built in broadcast network that’s always with us.
Plain and simple, Snapchat helps you tell Stories, face to face anytime, anywhere for free
Even if you never plan to use Snapchat or if you don’t believe that it can help you generate business or build a brand that is okay – what I want you to know is that Snapchat was a catalyst that changed how we communicate, how we interact with the camera and how we form digital communities.
It changed our communication and content consumption behaviors.
And when behaviors are changed or trained, our expectations aren’t far behind – we start to expect the same user experience in other places and we demand that brands engage with us on our own terms and in our preferred format.
Snapchat was the first app that allowed us to share in the moment. We didn’t have to rely on posting a static picture of our vacation and hope people commented on it. That was an accumulation model where our brands were the sum of our past posts over time and this was our first step towards instant expression and live streaming.
We could share our own brand story in real time with our community using our own personal media – our photos and videos - and that was an awesome user experience and once we got a taste of it, we didn’t want to go back.
Hundreds of millions of people got really comfortable talking to their phones and watching reality TV that we were creating. It became normal to watch raw and unedited video – we didn’t need green screens or teleprompters or software, it didn’t to be perfect we just needed it to be real.
Snapchat’s core features (disappearing content, vertical video and augmented reality) were so truly disruptive that they inspired some very well-known platforms that rhyme with Shmacebook and Schminstagram to develop identical features. That’s huge – they were making an impact that made important people take notice.
Now, we live and communicate at the same time and we can invite other people to experience that with us in real time.
AND even better I can talk to someone while it’s happening.
I DON’T WATCH TV ANYMORE BC IT DOESN’T TALK BACK and neither will ANY generation after this one
Tomorrow’s consumer is absolutely going to expect us to have our own television channels where we are the stars of the show. Being the star of your own show isn’t about ego or fame, it’s about connecting with people in the MOST human way possible.
Now we have to find new and better ways to connect with consumers because let’s face it we’re all too savvy – we have apps and access and that means we have the power – we don’t want to be sold or look at ads we want real people that we can relate to and we want to feel like we’re cared about first.
Our industry is undergoing constant disruption and that isn’t always a bad thing, change helps us pivot, it forces us to adapt and sometimes it changes human behavior and when our behaviors change, so do our expectations.
It is critical for any real estate professional who wants to create a powerful personal brand and amplify that brand in a way that connects with potential clients in a deep, relevant and relatable way.
Sharing our daily lives through these devices is about as real as you can get without being in the same physical space as another person.
We’ve entered an era of what I call “arm’s-length communication” where we have shrunk the distance between us and anyone in the world
I’m about to make a very bold statement, Snapchat is NOT a social media platform, it’s a conversation pipeline and trust accelerator that creates real screen-to-screen relationships.
Real estate is a relationship – rapport heavy business
Building a powerful personal brand today requires a CAMERA FIRST content strategy
Authenticity and storytelling are two major buzzwords in the world of marketing – showing your face every day creates a feeling of familiarity and getting to know someone every day eye-to-eye creates opportunities for relatability and you’re relatable to someone, you become very relevant to them.
People want to buy or sell a home with a trusted advisor and real time video is a trust accelerator. Tomorrow’s consumer is going to expect us to have our own television channels where we are the stars of the show. It’s not about ego or fame, it’s about showing people what we do without having to tell them.
It’s about communicating through the camera and creating authentic screen-to-screen relationships
I DON’T WATCH TV ANYMORE BC IT DOESN’T TALK BACK and neither will millions of people in a few short years
if it’s one concept that you walk away with today, please let it be this one. I can’t stress enough the importance of showing your face and talking to people screen to
We are talking in pictures and Snapchat was the first platform that allowed us to do that.
