This document presents two situations and asks which type of statistical test would be most appropriate to analyze each situation: 1) A comparison of time spent on schoolwork between samples of faculty and students. This calls for a matched-pairs comparison of means to determine if one group spends more time on average. 2) A comparison of appraisal values given to the same diamond rings by two different jewelers. This calls for an independent-samples comparison of proportions to determine if the jewelers give the same values on average.
