GREEN – Grass
Leaves, hedge and grass cuttings,
vegetable garden residue.
ORGANIC – Food waste
Food leftovers, rotten food, fruit,
and vegetable waste, coffee
grounds, tea filters and bags, pet
excrement and litter tray contents,
cut flowers and house plants, stale
breads, oily or greasy paper towels,
cold ashes, small bones and fish
remains (bones and shells).
DRY – Non-recyclable dry material
Any other material not listed above
and which does not come into any

8. How it works
For citizens

• Attach the tag to the bin;
• Fill the bin;
• Put the bin on the street on
the right day;
• Pay per use, proportionally
to the number of emptying.
• Take the RFID reader before
leaving the depot: reader colour
matches the colour of waste bins
to be collected;
• Empty bins as usual: no
additional operation required;
• Pay attention to the reader
feedbacks (warning on pending
payments and wrong bins);
• Put the reader it in the cradle at
the depot: it will start an
automatic
wireless
data
synchronisation.

9. Why active RFID?
• Quick and dirty: because it works!
• It works fine: reading rate 100%!
• Minimum operators training:
– Take the device from the cradle and put it back;
– Execute only usual collecting operation;
• No changes to be made to the waste
collection vehicles.

• The device collects: bin_ID, timestamp,
battery_level;
• Wow! I was going to forget concerns about
battery life?
• The battery life is of over 3 years – real data
from the field.
• The RFID active tag is thin and light: a longer
battery life could be easily reached increasing
its dimensions.
