2. Theme: Singapore In The World
This year, the theme for International Friendship Day (IFD) is
‘Singapore in the World’. The world today is getting increasingly
interconnected and people are more mobile. There is an increasing need
for Singaporeans to possess a global outlook and operate within
multinational settings. At the same time, it is important for them to be
rooted to Singapore while developing a cosmopolitan mindset through
appreciating the diverse cultures and opportunities that abound in the
world arena. We also want to encourage our students to engage with
our new citizens as well as the many non-
Singaporeans who have chosen to make Singapore their home. They
bring with them different perspectives, vibrant cultures and exciting
ideas which will enrich our lives.
3. IFD 2012: LEARNING POINTS
International Friendship Day is a day dedicated to the understanding
of Singapore's relations with neighbouring countries and beyond. It
aims to sensitise our children towards the geo-political realities
inherent in Singapore, as well as nurture in our students the spirit of
friendship and collaboration among people from different socio-
cultural backgrounds.
4. IFD 2012: LEARNING POINTS
We want our students to understand the importance of good
relations with our neighbours and beyond. More importantly, we need
to teach them that such relations cannot be taken for granted.
Singapore pursues an active engagement in the world as diplomacy,
like deterrence, is a key means by which we can ensure our security.
This is evident from our membership in many international
organisations such as ASEAN and the United Nations. It is also very
important for our students to understand that goodwill among nations
alone cannot guarantee peace.
Besides diplomacy, a strong and credible SAF is key in ensuring that
our national interests, independence and sovereignty are
safeguarded.
