7. Quran Surat Al-'A`r f (The Heights)ā
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every
masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive.

8. Imam Ali has said one should remember Almighty
Allah whilst eating and should not talk too much, as
the food is a blessing from Him, and when one
consumes that blessing, it is time to praise and thank
Him.
To eat with the right hand whilst sitting on the knees.
9. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) has said, "A person who would
like the food to not cause him harm should not eat until his
bowels are clear and he feels very hungry. When he begins to
eat, he should recite 'Bismillah'. The food should be chewed,
and when there is a little bit of hunger left to be appeased, he
should stop eating."
Indeed Allah says in the Qur'an,
"...eat and drink, and be not extravagant" (7:31) and the Holy
Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said, "We
are a people who do not eat until we feel hungry, and when
we eat we do not satiate ourselves (we do not eat
excessively).
10. " A very simple narration of the Prophet that we
can always keep in mind: "Eat when you desire
and stop while you still desire." (Bihar al-Anwar)

12. So begin in the name of Allah,
By always saying Bismillah,

It’s good to eat with your right hand,

That would surely be most rude.
14. Drink your tea and sip it slow,
You don’t have to gulp you know,
When you’ve finished thank Allah,
By always saying Alhamdulillah.
15. Take your time and chew quite well,
Pick up morsels in case it fell,
Eat your food and leave no waste,
There’s no need to eat in haste.

has countless benefits; it is narrated that the Holy
Prophet asked Imam Ali to do this, for a man who
takes salt before and after meals is saved from 70 types
of curses, a major one being leprosy.
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) has also said
regarding salt: "It is the cure for 70 diseases, if people
would know the advantages of salt they would not use
any other cure except salt."
22. Take a pinch of salt before you start to eat.
The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “ Three
bites with salt taken before the
meal turn away from the son of
Adam seventy-two kinds of
affliction including madness and
leprosy (in all its forms).” (Tib al-
Nabiy)
23. Always eat with your right
hand,
take small bites
and chew the food.
The Messenger (s.a.w) said: “ Make your loaves small,
because with every loaf there comes a blessing.”

27. Do not over eat.
Always put a little food on your
plate and add more if you are still
hungry
The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “ Eat when you feel the appetite, and
stop eating when you still feel the appetite.”
(Reference:Tib al-Nabiy-Prophetic Medicine)
28. The Prophet (saw) said: "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than
his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his
back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and
one-third for air."
29. The Messenger (s.a.w) said: “ When you are offered bread
and meat, start with the bread and ally the hunger, then
eat the meat.”

The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “ (eating) Meat make the flesh grow; and he
who omits eating it for forty days will have his body condition
deteriorate.” (Tib al-Nabiy)
30. Finally thank Allah for the food he
has given you by saying:
ALHAMDULILAH
(All praise is for Allah).
31. After finishing the meal (Qailula)
Imam al-Ridha (al-Riza) (a.s) said: “ After
you finish eating, lay on your back and put
your right leg on the left one.”

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and
dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and
eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E’s - Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Play more games.
6. Sleep for 7 hours.
7. Take a 10-30 minutes walk daily. And while you walk, smile.
33. Talk to your parents,
your brothers and sisters,
your school friends,
what you have learnt about
table manners.
34. Cool the meal off
The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “ Cool the meal off, because
the hot meal lacks the blessing
(it does not ally hunger).” (Reference:Tib al-Nabiy)
The Prophet (s.a.w) prohibited blowing on foods
or beverages or blowing on the prostration site.
35. According to Hazrat Imam Hasan (a.s.) twelve points should be
kept in view about food by every muslim. Four are compulsory,
four are Sunnat (optional) and four are about manners.
The compulsory ones are:
a) Knowing one's ‘Giver’
b) To know that all that we have is from God
and be satisfied with the food He gives
c) Saying ‘Bismillah’
d) Thanking God.
36. The Sunnat are:
a) To wash hands before eating
b) To sit by keeping one's weight to the left side
c) To eat with atleast three fingers
d) To lick the fingers.

38. Du’a before Meals
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. O Allah, bless
Muhammad and his family. O Allah, I ask You, in my eating and
drinking, safety from illness, and to obey You and remember You and
be thankful to You, as long as it remains in my body, and through its
strength encourage me towards Your worship and inspire me to refrain
from Your disobedience. O Allah bless Muhammad and his family.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family Praise be to Allah Who has: fed us, provided
water for us, sufficed us, supported us, sheltered us, favored us, and bestowed benefits.
Praise be to Allah Who feeds but is not fed.

41. General Discouraged Acts
To eat while walking, except when forced, as per the tradition of Imam
Sadiq
To take very hot food, but if one does, (s)he should not cool it by
blowing on it; rather it should be allowed to cool itself.
To eat while lying or relaxing; however, there is no harm in resting on
the left hand while eating.
To eat alone. It is recommended to eat with one's servants and slaves,
sitting on the ground.
To leave plates uncovered. Imam al-Sadiq said, "Do not leave your
plates uncovered, for Satan spits on uncovered plates and takes from
them what he wants." (Mustadrak al-Wasail)

Before you eat you should always say bismillah.
You should get washed up.
You should not overfill your plate.
You shouldn’t eat before anyone else eats.
You should let elders start to eat first.
