Dear Mrs Merkel
I am writing to you on behalf of the Central Committee of the Egyptian Change Centre -
ECC, an organisation founded by the new generation of the Egyptian opposition. We are a
group of 50 professionals based inside and outside Egypt with businesses and activities in
more than nine countries in our first quarter of public work. Our group represents the new
wave of the main-stream opposition movement in Egypt, with millions of Egyptians
supporting our values, principles and objectives. Our primary goals are to put an end to the
age of the military régimes in Egypt and to lead the change required to create a new free
and democratic Egypt.
In our peaceful course of actions to achieve our objectives, we believe that the regular
communication with leaders of the EU Commission is crucial and necessary. We completely
understand that the future Democratic Egypt should be an effective partner with the modern
world, working on all fronts for the sake of making the world a better and a safer place.
2. In this same context and as we value the principles of freedom and democracy that the
Republic of Germany stands for, we find it extremely important to communicate with you
about the significant incident that occurred at the Berlin Airport on 15 August 2017. Mr.
AbdelRahman Ezz, an Egyptian reporter who was on his way to visit his family in Turkey,
was arrested and held for 6 hours based on a false report from the Egyptian embassy which
represents the current military regime in Egypt. This incident is a clear violation of the rights
of Mr. Ezz , especially given that Mr. Ezz currently lives in England as a political refugee
after having escaped from the military régime’s offensive actions against the free press
several years ago.
It is also unfortunately not the first time that the authorities at German airports have acted
based on false reports against Egyptian opposition figures . Not long ago, Mr. Ahmed
Mansour, a well-known media representer and reporter, faced a similar situation and was
held under arrest for a long time. Hence, we address our request to you and your party to
take all the required measures to ensure that the authorities in German airports never put
innocent people under threat for no apparent reason. These acts represent a clear violation
of all the bindings UN Human Rights acts as well as the European Commission Human
Rights code of conduct.
As we are looking forward to building efficient and long-term relations with the German
government, the German political parties and leaders of the free world with the aim of
helping Egypt to win its freedom, we wish to ensure that European leaders and governments
are standing up for the principles upon which they were elected.
Sincerely,
On behalf of the Central Committee of the ECC
Prof.Dr. Hossam El-Shazly
