Unit III Assignment DescriptionOrganization Evaluation (op/ed)
General Information: This assignment builds on Unit II’s organization profile report. You will use the same organization you focused on in the profile, so that portion of your information gathering for Unit III is, potentially, done, though you can keep adding to that aspect of development if needed or if you so choose. The main focus of research in this project will be to find a publication—a newspaper, magazine, blog site, etc.—that would publish an op/ed (opinion/editorial) piece about your organization. For instance, if you are working with a local charitable organization, the Murfreesboro newspaper would be a likely publisher of such a story, as might a Murfreesboro-focused blog site; or if you have focused on an environmental organization, Mother Earth News is a magazine dealing with environmental issues. For student organizations, Sidelines, our campus newspaper, would be the most likely publisher, but because MTSU is an important entity in Murfreesboro, the local newspaper would also likely be interested in your op/ed. You will find a publication source and read a few articles published therein, analyzing the articles to discern what type of diction and types of specific language are used, and you will seek to identify the publication’s likely demographic. This demographic will become the audience for your evaluative op/ed essay.
Evaluations and op/ed pieces: Evaluations are types of arguments called claims of value; that is, they pass a value judgement upon their topics, declaring the topic as good/bad, useful/ not useful, right/wrong, or better or worse than something else. Comparisons are not an option in this assignment because the focus of the writing will be on a specific group, and moral judgements (right/wrong) should be avoided because they require much more development than an op/ed piece typically allows (some publications print significant op/ed pieces, but those are usually solicited, not taken as submissions from untested writers). So, your evaluation will probably focus on the ideas of good/bad or useful/not useful. But what exactly do those words mean?
Although good information is a part of the writing, one of the “tricks” of (and a requirement for) an evaluation is to establish the criteria for evaluation. What, in fact, makes an organization good/bad or useful/not useful? Does it revolve around their mission and their success in implementing that mission? Does it involve how the organization spends its money? Does it include service to its members or the community? You need to make those decisions, and you need to make them clear to your readers, so they understand how you have arrived at yo ...

Murfreesboro, the local newspaper would also likely be
interested in your op/ed. You will find a publication source and

demographic. This demographic will become the audience for
your evaluative op/ed essay.
Evaluations and op/ed pieces: Evaluations are types of
arguments called claims of value; that is, they pass a value
2. judgement upon their topics, declaring the topic as good/bad,
useful/ not useful, right/wrong, or better or worse than
something else. Comparisons are not an option in this
assignment because the focus of the writing will be on a
specific group, and moral judgements (right/wrong) should be
avoided because they require much more development than an
op/ed piece typically allows (some publications print significant
op/ed pieces, but those are usually solicited, not taken as
submissions from untested writers). So, your evaluation will
probably focus on the ideas of good/bad or useful/not useful.
But what exactly do those words mean?
Although good information is a part of the writing, one of
the “tricks” of (and a requirement for) an evaluation is to
establish the criteria for evaluation. What, in fact, makes an
organization good/bad or useful/not useful? Does it revolve
around their mission and their success in implementing that
mission? Does it involve how the organization spends its
money? Does it include service to its members or the
community? You need to make those decisions, and you need to
make them clear to your readers, so they understand how you
have arrived at your value judgement. Organizationally, the
evaluative criteria should be presented in your essay before you
begin to examine the evidence that supports/develops your
argument and conclusion; thus, the evaluative criteria are
typically presented in the introduction, usually, in an op/ed, as
part of a single paragraph that also introduces the topic (the
organization) and thesis (the conclusion of the value
judgement). However, it is not uncommon for evaluative criteria
to be presented to the reader one at a time, as topic sentences
within the body of the essay.
Op/ed pieces are typically quite short, so though they can
use language that expresses a pro- or anti- stance in regard to
the organization, the language is concise, to accommodate a
large amount of information in a small space. Additinally, op/ed
pieces are journalistic in nature, so they do not use MLA Style
documentation. The documentation in an op/ed piece is done in
3. the sentence (there are no parenthetical citations), and there is
no works cited page.
Op/ed pieces are typically short due to publication space and
the cost of printing, so this assignment has a minimum and
maximum length requirement; it will be between 700 and 1000
words in length, including the title, but excluding the heading,
which is only to identify it as an
Assignment for this course and wouldn’t typically be part of an
op/ed piece.
Learning goals: This assignment furthers our exploration of
thesis-driven genres, of audience consideration and rhetorical
situation, and of composing and discourse community
(collaborative peer review). A primary purpose in the
development of this assignment is an awareness of the potential
power of writing to inform and influence a “real world”
audience.
This Society Raises Awareness for Human Rights in KSA
While thirty years ago, most Americans knew very little about
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, there’s not one who has a vivid
picture come to mind as soon as he/she hears the name. It is
probably most often associated as an empty desert where
uneducated nomads roam freely. While this may have been true
100 years ago, a large part of Saudi Arabia is now developed
and its people are all given the opportunity of free education.
Other people may say Saudi Arabia is a backwards society that
hates women and treats its own citizens poorly. Although the
kingdom has come under attack for human rights violations by
its people, they have worked very hard to change its reputation
as a country that refuses women of their rights and unfairly
judges accused criminals to a country that treats all its citizens
as equals. One organization in the country is working alongside
the government to bring awareness to these issues and turn them
around for the better. That organization is called the National
Society for Human Rights in Saudi Arabia. It is headed by very
respectable, educated people in the country and is funded by the
4. Saudi government. They have been working for twelve years
now to bring Saudi Arabia closer to the free world and have
equal rights for all people in the country. While it is not perfect,
the society feels responsible for the progress the country has
made in women’s rights and other human rights areas in the
kingdom and still do work until this day for progress in Saudi
Arabia.
The National Society for Human Rights was founded in March
9, 2004 by a group of men and women in cooperation with the
government to defend human rights in the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia. According to their website, their purpose for defending
human rights is to have justice, equality, and safety in their
country while also making sure the Islamic values and laws are
not sacrificed. They have many close relationships with other
organizations around the world. They have handouts and
brochures. They answer questions and make statements on
issues related to Saudi Arabia, such as women, terrorism,
religion, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and much more. There is
also much controversy, as with any organization. For example,
it receives funds from the government, but the website states it
has no connections with government agencies and is
“financially administratively independent.” This is good, but
any organization receiving government funds would answer to
the government at some point. Other human rights websites
have also criticized the agency for not being completely
committed to certain issues and human rights causes. Therefore,
to see what the agency is really like and to report fully on the
functions and beliefs of the society, emails were sent to the
chairman, Dr. Mufleh Al-Qahtani and vice-chairman Dr. Saleh
Al Khthlan for interviews. Both responded with details on the
society’s happenings. The website was thoroughly researched
and other websites from Human Rights Watch, Saudi Women’s
Weblog, and others were also visited to receive a detailed report
without bias.
First, the interviews with Al-Qahtani and Al Kthlan revealed the
society’s desire to clear Saudi Arabia’s reputation for human
5. rights violations. Al-Qahtani admitted that many of these
accusations have been true, but with their help, the kingdom has
been able to improve on the human rights conditions in their
country. For example, Al-Qahtani reported that before the
society’s beginnings in 2004, reports of domestic abuse were
almost 5,000 every year. In 2015, there were about 2,437
reports of domestic abuse at the end of the year. He counter-
argued those who say that Saudi Arabia has human rights
violations because of executions. There is a statement on the
website that objects to these accusations. For example, earlier in
the year, the media reported that the kingdom would be
executed 47 prisoners earlier this year, which led to outrage
from the international community. In his statement, Al-Qahtani
reports, “
The Chairman of the Society, Dr. Mufleh Rabiean Al-Qahtani,
has explained the
attitude of the National Society for Human Rights to the
implementation of the
sentences against 47 convicts saying that the Society always
demands the reference
of the convicts on terrorism issues to justice, and to pronounce
sentences on them according to their crimes as well as having a
fair trial. Regarding those convicts,
the day has come to carry out the sentences that were issued
against them and
which enjoys the following (3):
The statement goes on to list reasons why the government would
be executing the 47 criminals, including, that they had all had
lawyers and public trials, their crimes were severe, and the
victims deserve justice. Another statement on the website is in
response to an act of congress to allow victim’s families of
terrorist attacks to sue the government allegedly guilty of the
act of terror performed by the group (S.2040 - 114th Congress
1). The society states that the congress is asserting its power
where it shouldn’t and should be watched by the other
countries. Moreover, other nations’ citizens do not have the
6. power to sue other governments. The piece of legislation was
actually directed at Saudi Arabia in regards to 9/11, which is
what made the society speak up. The society addresses many
issues of human rights and does its best to fix the issues in its
country.
However, the society still faces much criticism,
particularly in its boasting of improving women’s rights in
Saudi Arabia. In another statement, the society directed its
focus at the Human Rights Watch when they stated that the
conditions of women in Saudi Arabia were actually getting
worse because of the continued use of male guardians for
women. The society of human rights defends male guardians
because they are part of the religion; moreover much effort had
already been taking to defend those women who were mistreated
by their guardians. Actually, the situation has improved, the
society said, since domestic abuse has decreased (2). Also on
the subject of women, a Saudi women’s blog had bashed the
society because of a situation involving a five-year-old girl
named Lama who was tortured to death by her father. The blog
claims that although social workers have proven that the girl
was raped and killed, the NSHR denies that she was raped. In
fact, the blog states that NSHR general director Khalid Al
Fakhri claims she wasn’t tortured. A woman involved in NSHR
went on the national news claiming she was speaking out on the
case as an active, not as part of NSHR. If these accusations are
true, NSHR may be more politically driven than from the heart
as it claims.
In conclusion, the National Society of Human Rights is an
organization that defends human rights while not compromising
their Islamic ideals, which are the most upheld values of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They have released many brochures,
statements, and addressed many cases, which involve human
rights violations. The chairman and vice-chairman Al-Qahtani
and Al Kthlan both claim evidence of declining numbers of
abuse and mistreatment of women in the 12 years they have
been a society. They are partly funded by the kingdom’s
7. monarchy but claim no political ties. This has been questioned
by blogs such as Saudi Woman and other organizations such as
the Human Rights Watch. However, the society continues to be
a beacon of hope for many of the suffering in the kingdom and
it continues to work for the people. It’s many statements and
reports put into question acts of other governments, accusations
from other groups, and condemns terrorism and abuse that
happens in their home and around the world. The society is what
people who don’t know about Saudi Arabia should know about.
