Jealousy In Othello
Othello by William Shakespeare Jealousy is a powerful drug. When someone is jealous, one can
only imagine how far someone would go because of it. In the play Othello by William
Shakespeare, there were several characters that went through different ways of processing their
jealousy. Iago's jealousy provokes his idea to get back at the people he felt was not deserving
enough of the things they had or their happiness. His plans succeeds but by the end, no one wins.
Iago's jealousy forms at the beginning of the play which causes Othello's jealousy towards the end
and because of it, it results in people hurt mentally and physically.
Iago's jealousy ends up ruining multiple people's lives. "Jealousy, once awakened, becomes
self–perpetuating, self–intensifying, and where no justifying evidence for it exist... " (Godfrey,
!972, pg. 418). As long as he is gaining from what people have to lose then he is happy. He does
not care what he has to put people through in order to get what he wants. His jealousy forms from
two reasons: thinking Othello was sleeping with Emilia and Othello giving the position to Cassio
instead of giving to him. "Off–Capp'd to him: and, by the faith of man, I know my price, I am worth
no worse a place: But he, as loving his own pride and purposes, Evades them, with a bombast
circumstance Horribly stuff'd with epithets of war; And, in conclusion, Nonsuits my mediators; for,
"Certes," says he, "I have already chosen my officer." And what was he? One Michael

Essay About Jealousy
You ask me what is jealously? Listen to me. Jealously is an emotion that usually develops from rage,
embarrassment, and the fear of being abandoned. Listen to me. I can not use your pity. I can only use
your understanding and nothing else.
Jealously is having low self esteem and being insecure. You lay awake at night wondering what
you did or why you're not good enough to be loved. You ask yourself, why did he leave you for
her? Why is she so tall, slender, and perfect? You wonder why you can't be like her. You have the
heat of rage and embarrassment coursing through your veins at the near thought of her perpetual
beauty. You stand there watching them flirt and joke with each other and you hurt. The hurt of a ten
pound boulder crushing...show more content...
Your jealousy starts to kick in and you start to feel out of place which results in you being
embarrassed. They tell you you're overreacting, but how else am I supposed to act? You're my
friend when we're not in public, but when we're out and about you act as if you could care less.
Jealously is feeling empty. It's feeling as if you're on the verge of losing your loved one because
once again you feel as if you're not good enough. Your friends tell you to communicate better with
your love. You do that and he/she reassures you that you in fact have nothing to worry about.
They tell you they love you and will always be there. You start to believe what they're saying
because you trust them. Not long after, you start to feel jealous again because you feel as if
you're drifting apart. The sad part is that you never speak up on it again. You just take what is
dished to you. You start to feel empty because you long for things to change. You want what you
see in other people's relationships. So you finally suck up all your pride and bring it to their
attention that you're jealous once again. You tell them that you feel as if they're giving all their
attention to other people. He/She replies, "You're doing too much. I don't think this is going to
work out." You sit alone in your room, in the dark. You cry hot tears down your eyes as you think
to yourself, "if only I wasn't so jealous."

Iago's Jealousy
People often pretend to be things they are not, just to get what they want out of people. They go
to great lengths just to benefit themselves and do not care how it affects anyone else. Iago is one
of those people; he went to the extreme just ruin Cassio and Othello in any way he could. Iago
seemed to have compassion and great loyalty to his friends in the beginning of the play but as his
plan started to be revealed he showed that he was inclined towards the manipulation of other
characters due to his jealousy.
Iago is very successful at his schemes. He is able to get the trust of everyone around him and
appears very honest in their eyes(3.3.290–214). His deep hatred for Othello and Cassio was enough
motivation to continue his plan, which

Jealousy Othello Essay
Throughout Shakespeare's play, Othello, the major theme of jealousy is explored in detail through
the main characters Othello and Iago's actions. In the tragedy Othello, Shakespeare focuses on how
jealousy affects Othello and the other major characters to result ultimately in their destruction. The
theme of jealousy is evident throughout the play as it motivates the characters' actions and suggests
alot about the impacts, effects and nature of jealousy itself. In Shakespeare's Othello, jealousy is
portrayed through the major characters of Iago and Othello. It acts as a poison administered by
Iago's words to Othello which causes him to transform from an honest noble general into a vengeful
murderer. Jealousy is the "Green eyed monster."...show more content...
One can tell that Iago's jealousy has corrupted Othello. Earlier in the play Othello describes
desdimona as "wondrous" and Heavenly" after Iago brings him evidence of her betrayal he
describes her with wordssuch as a "haggard" or "lewd minx" and even "whore." This seems to
prove the great effect jealousy has had on othello and how fast it has truly corrupted his character.
Othello's jealousy destroys his love through his hatred. Consequently, Othello has decided he
must kill Desdemona. Even though Desdemona tries to tell him the truth, Othello is completely
irrational and refuses to listen to her. Emilia, Iago's wife is also affected by jealousy. She tells
Othello that she found the hankerchief and gave it to Iago, thus revealing that he planted it in
Cassios room himself and is responsible for the whole bloody mess. Blind with rage Iago stabs
Emilia from behind, murdering her. Othello then seriously wounds Iago but does not kill him. He
states the he will not kill Iago because it is "happiness to die". Instead. As the truth sinks in about
Iago's deceipt Othello realizes that by believing Iago he led to the deaths of Roderigo, Desdemona,
and Emilia. Because of this he then kills himself as an attonement for his sins and dies next to his
wife Desdimona. Thorughout Othello Jealousy is seen almost like a disease that drives one to the
point of madness. This is seen through how Iago corrupts others with his jealousy like a disease and

crimes over things that can be prevented. Our youth is killing people for simple reasons like you

on top of his head. Camden died from the injuries he received from his older brother. The motive
behind why the brother killed his little brother is because the infant was receiving more attention
than him. The brother was only eleven years old and himself was still a child and took another
life. The mother was also charged for leaving two children alone but the child was charged with a

Iago’s Jealousy Essay
Iago's Jealousy
In Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, good is often confronted by evil, in which almost every case is in
the form of jealousy. Iago, the plays antagonist, is a very manipulative villain. Iago uses his own
agony and distress brought upon him by his envy of others, to provoke the same agony within the
characters in the play. Jealousy's ability are shown to influence people to new ends and make all
humanistic judgment disappear leaving that man a monster torn apart by envy. Jealousy's true
destructive wrath and the pure evil it brings out in people can be revealed through Iago's actions
throughout the tragedy Othello. Through out the play jealousy is a ruler over Iago's thoughts and
actions, influencing the way he feels about...show more content...
In Act "Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy! /It is the green–eyed monster which doth mock/ The meat
it feeds on. That cuckold lives in bliss/Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger,/But, oh, what
damnГЁd minutes tells he o'er/Who dotes, yet doubts– suspects, yet soundly loves!" (3.iii.170–175).
Through Iago's witty nature he is able to nonchalantly set his malignant plan into motion by
planting a suspicion in the mind of Othello. Iago harnesses in on the envious agony he endures
and uses it as a weapon on the man he is envious of, leading to the destruction of him. Iago knows
the ability of jealousy, and with this he knows he can manipulate Othello and make him feel the
same discomfort he himself feels. This reveals the enormous amount of preparation Iago has put
into his plan and the true evil that is brewing beneath the surface. Iago's loss of self respect and
his loss of respect for others have led him to be an evil scheming beast with no account for the
lives of others. Iago is a jealous beast and he knows the true power and control jealousy holds on a
man, Iago knows the danger it holds and uses it in his favor against Othello. In Act 3 scene 3 Iago
says "Dangerous conceits are, in their natures, poisons. /Which at the first are scarce found to
distaste, /But with a little act upon the blood. /Burn like the mines of Sulphur. I did say so:/Look,

Iago Jealousy Essay
Iago in William Shakespeare's play Othello is powered by a force of jealousy that causes all the
problems presented throughout the play. It is believed Othello's jealousy is the source of the tragic
events, but it was Iago's jealousy that brought Othello's to the surface. Iago's jealousy stirs from
vexation towards Othello. Othello has given Cassio a promotion in rank and not Iago. Iago believes
he is a superior fit for the position than Cassio. Out of spite of not receiving the promotion like he
wanted Iago plans "to get his place and plume up my will in double knavery." (Crowther 58). In
other words Iago is going to venture and pilfer Cassio's rank and manipulate him so he can wound
Othello at the same time because Iago feels like...show more content...
It's a green–eyed monster that makes fun of the victims it devours. The man who knows his wife is
cheating on him is happy, because at least he isn't friends with the man she's sleeping with. But think
of the unhappiness of a man who worships his wife, yet doubts her faithfulness. He suspects her, but
still loves her. (Crowther 143)
Othello is in disbelief. He does not presume that something that vivid could possibly be correct.
Othello counters that someone as faithful and virtuous as Desdemona could never cheat. He
continues on by adding "I'll have to see some real evidence before I start suspecting her of
anything bad" (Crowther 145). Iago then goes on to explain why Desdemona could have done
what she did convincing Othello that maybe she could have cheated. Furthermore, Othello informs
Desdemona that he isn't feeling well. She grabs her handkerchief and massages his forehead.
Othello tells her that her handkerchief is not sufficing. He escorts her to dinner when the precious
cloth falls. Emilia picks it up and hands it over to Iago. If Emilia was an amazing friend to
Desdemona as she claims to be she would have given the handkerchief back to her instead of her
husband that she knew has been wanting it for some time.
At this point in the play is where everything escalates even more. The handkerchief goes back and
forth between characters, Iago gets Cassio drunk, Othello strips Cassio of his rank, Cassio and
Roderigo brawl, Iago

When we are jealous we worry that our partner might find someone else more appealing and we
fear that he or she will reject us. Since we feel threatened that our partner might find someone
more attractive, we may activate jealousy as a way to cope with this threat. Similar to other forms
of worry, jealousy leads us to focus only on the negative. We interpret our partner's behaviour as
reflecting a loss of interest in us or a growing interest in someone else. It results into insecurities
and misunderstandings and ultimately we don't trust our partners which causes the separation. The
only reason for this is that we consider other people more cool and attractive than ourselves and
we are not confident enough that our partner deserves us or not. And when we start hating some
people just because they a good in some other thing or has anything better than us. We
automatically think that our partner does not want to stay with us. And this is the reason why we
start hating any small comment from our partner and start to think that he or she is searching for
flaws in him. Jealous to an extent is good as it creates the feeling of love and to keep our partner
with ourselves one would do more efforts too but everything outside the limits is unbearable and
hence it makes a full stop to the existing love and

Othello- Jealousy
Jealousy, "the green–eyed monster"
Shakespeare is consistent in his use of repeated themes throughout his works, particularly those of
love, death, and betrayal. Shakespeare repeats these themes to set the mood through his works. It is
important for Shakespeare to be consistent with his themes, or the plays would lose their meaning
and mood. All of these themes are present in Othello, but the most dominant is the theme of jealousy,
which presents itself multiple times throughout the play. We see the kind of jealousy which is envy
of what others have, and as the kind of which is fear of losing what we have. According to The
New Lexicon Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language, "jealousy is a state of

Iago then tells Roderigo that "elsewhere" will most likely be Cassio, and advises Roderigo that he
should start a fight with Cassio at the evening's celebration.
This begins part two of jealous Iago's plan of destruction. That night, Iago gets Cassio drunk and
sends Roderigo to start the fight with him. When Cassio stabs Governor Montano as he tried to
hold Cassio down, Iago sent Roderigo to raise alarm in the town. Othello arrives and strips Cassio
of his rank of lieutenant. Roderigo thought this plan was for him to get rid of Cassio so he would
win over Desdemona, but really it was for selfish Iago. Iago knew Cassio could not control his
liquor and would do something bad enough to lose his title, the title Iago was jealous that he did not
have. Iago then tells the audience that eliminating Cassio is the first important step in his plan to
ruin Othello. "I hate the Moor, And it is thought abroad that 'twixt my sheets He's done my office."
(Shakespeare I.iii.). Now that Iago succeeded on getting Cassio stripped of his rank, his plan will
continue to destroy Othello.
Part three of Iago's plan begins with Cassio distraught and feeling that his reputation has been
ruined forever. Iago guarantees Cassio that he can get back on Othello's good side by using
Desdemona as a midway. Iago tells the audience that he

Relationships can drastically be affected by someone that holds a personality trait such as jealousy.
With jealousy comes trust issues, that can further form problems during the span of a relationship.
At times, it is natural to feel that instinct of jealousy but to a certain extent. Someone who is not
confident, usually compares themselves to others and constantly questions their partners
commitment to them. Jealousy can also lead you to have hidden motives of making your partner
feel insecure. For example, a woman who feels insecure, will constantly flirt with other men to get a
reaction from her boyfriend. This behavior is caused by a constant feeling of low self–confidence.
Isolation of your partner occurs when you worry that your partner will make the most of their chance
with other individuals rather than you. Instead of being supportive and loving towards your partner,
you grow this resentment towards them. Wanting for yourself what you would want for others only
impacts your mind in a positive manner. When you resent someone's happiness you are left in a
bitter state of mind. This uncertainty can create a negative environment, that can be detrimental to

You want what you see in other people's relationships. So you finally suck up all your pride and bring it to their attention that you're jealous once again. You tell them that you feel as if they're giving all their attention to other people. He/She replies, "You're doing too much. I don't think this is going to work out." You sit alone in your room, in the dark. You cry hot tears down your eyes as you think to yourself, "if only I wasn't so jealous." Jealousy is a dream. A Get more content on HelpWriting.net
