The last statewide agricultural mapping implementation was published in 1980
Produced by creating hand crafted maps by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA)
and later digitized by the Office of State Planning (OSP)
Since that time Hawai‘i has suffered a deficiency in data, not only in the spatial mapping of agricultural production, but also in the collection of specific crop types.
Seeing a need to improve an update ag data Hawaii Department of Agriculture contracted the SDAV lab to continue upon the award winning work of the County of Hawai‘i Department of Research and Development
mapping project is focused on commercial farming efforts that make a reasonable financial contribution to the farmer and produce products that are either sold for local consumption or exported elsewhere.
Contracts call for a 3.0 acre minimum mapping area for crops. Every effort is being made to locate and map smaller commercial agricultural operations as well.
Creation of digital feature layer, cartographic maps & reporting
Layer was created with the intent of mapping Agricultural land use verses land cover,.. layer was digitized using up to date imagery, ground truthing, and information from the agricultural community. Via Discussions with landowners, farmers, agencies

In order to receive input from the agricultural community, a web mapping application was developed using ESRI’s JavaScript API and serviced using ArcGIS Online. The web mapping application used the preliminary crop layer to display recorded agricultural farms that allowed the end users to search for their farm by address or location. End users were also able to add data and comment on any discrepancies to both confirm and improve the accuracy of the agricultural land footprint.
The web mapping component was written using HTML 5 & ESRI JavaScript API
