Chapter 1 Draft
1. 1. The mystery person
“Izzi!”
It was humanity calling again.
Danger!
I walked down the stairs from my bedroom to Claudia standing by the front door. She was on her
cell phone, and waved her hand impatiently when she saw me.
“Izzi? What took you so long? Come on! We‟re going to be late,” She said, and I followed her
out the door. The shiny black Mercedes was parked in front of the house, and I hopped in the passenger‟s
seat. Claudia was already in the driver‟s seat with her cell phone by her side waiting for a call. She put the
key into the ignition, turned it, and drove out the vast driveway.
What danger? You might ask. First of all, I‟m Isadora Martinez — Izzi for short — and I‟ve taken
the time out to tell you my slightly edited story. Trust me, you wouldn‟t want to know the whole story
anyway, it‟s not worth the trees. Besides, I don‟t want you thinking badly about me, now do I? Anyway,
I‟m not really sure how I‟m supposed to explain this to you but I don‟t belong on earth. Now I know what
you‟re thinking, “How could you drop the „I don‟t belong on earth‟ bomb in such a careless manner?” To
be honest, I really don‟t care, and as long as you understand the whole situation, it‟s fine with me. I‟m
also not supposed to bond with humans, but now that I have, there‟s… danger. I could run from this
danger, but I can not forsake my humanity at this point. I wouldn‟t say it was my fault either, I didn‟t
know, no one was there to warn me about the… you-know-what. Besides, the damage has been done,
there‟s nothing I can do. Why complain about what I could have done differently? After all, I‟m glad it
happened that way because I don‟t regret my earthly existence.
What earthly existence? Okay, I‟ll tell you. I did live on earth as a human, and you‟re probably
wondering how that happened if I wasn‟t born that way. Well, it all started about 13 years ago when I was
only 3 years old, and two humble individuals adopted me in the city of Chicago. Exactly why they were
in Chicago is unknown to me — I guess it was fate. Logan and Claudia were married, and the doctor
reported that Claudia was unable to have children. They never actually told me the story to how she
adopted me, but they did and that‟s all that matters. Right?
I found out they actually lived in California; therefore, I lived in California… obviously. The two
had a happy marriage, and claimed it was all the more better after the adoption. I was beginning to
question their analysis. Why? Well, because 3 years later the worst possible thing happened… they
adopted another child. Her name was Trisha. She was a year, 5 months, and whatever days older than me

and because of this fact, she thinks she can boss me around like a mindless idiot — she has another thing
coming. I didn‟t like her… obviously. She was, I don‟t know, cruel I guess. The sad part about this was
that Logan and Claudia knew what a trickster she was. They handled things in a way that, honestly, didn‟t
make a difference. Try punishing her. Punishment wouldn‟t be too bad with a flat screen TV and all the
movies you would ever want to watch. Plus the snacks and soda that never seems to run out, all in one big
fun abode. Punishment in our house was like fun time at the zoo.
Stupid idiots.
So how did I get stuck with humanity? That‟s an easy question. I grew too attached to them, and
loved my human family with a passion. Trisha and I were sisters, of course were going to fight, but I still
loved her. You‟re probably wondering how this is such a bad thing, how it‟s such a… “Danger.” That‟s
an easy question too, but a little complicated to explain. It began on this day, in the car, when Claudia was
driving me to the airport to meet this mystery person who was in a hurry. We had to get there quick
before, who ever was waiting for us, left. As I sat quietly in the car, little did I know the life changing
things that lolled ahead.
The building was huge, and white, as the Mercedes drove into the massive airport parking lot, and
almost every parking spot was taken. We had to park in the back — far from the entrance.
“Mom, why are we here anyway? And why does Trisha get to stay home and I don‟t?” I asked as
we got out the car.
“Trisha doesn‟t have to come if she doesn‟t want to,” Claudia said, walking up the parking lot.
“Why can‟t I stay home?”
“Because, Izzi… this isn‟t about Trisha,”
“Then what is this all about?” She sighed ignoring me, and I rolled my eyes, “You‟re so unfair,”
Finally, we got to the entrance, and a swarm of people sauntered the place. Claudia was on her
cell phone again, standing in the middle of the room.
“Flight to England…? I think it leaves in about 15 minutes… Okay, I‟ll be there in a second,”
She said, and put her cell phone back in her purse. “Come on,”

Claudia scurried through the many people — her light golden hair swaying in the breeze — and I
struggled to keep up with her frantic pace. It was a little surprising that someone so short could walk so
fast. She wasn‟t the tallest person I knew — I was even a few inches above her.
She finally stopped at a small table in a corner of the airport; countless people still roamed the
place. At the table was a woman reading a grey old book, her eyes super-glued to the page.
“Chazelle?” Claudia said, and she lifted her head at last and smiled delightfully.
“Claudia! Nice to see you again,” the woman greeted getting up from the table to shake Claudia‟s
hand. When she stood, she was like an angelic statue, maybe 5 feet 8 inches high I assumed — perhaps a
2 inches below her.
“Nice to meet you too. This is Izzi,” Claudia said motioning to me. The woman‟s eyes lit up, and
she grinned, all 32 teeth glistening.
“Isadora,” She uttered, and her hands clasped together by her inflated chest. It was a little creepy;
I‟d never seen someone so happy to see me in my life. Her cheeks round and merry, in high spirits, I
thought it wouldn‟t be possible to be any happier — but I was dead wrong.
“Just Izzi,” I said, and she beamed when she heard my voice.
“Of course… Izzi,” She corrected with a light giggle. “I‟m Chazelle. Nice to meet you,” I nodded
once with a smile.
“We should sit down,” Claudia said gesturing us to the table, and the three of us sat down. I was
eager to know who this “Chazelle” was, and why Claudia insisted that I meet her.
“Well, I guess I better just get on with this.” Chazelle began with a sigh, “Izzi, first I want to say
what a pleasure it is to meet you. I‟ve been… searching… looking for you for years.” She sighed again
placing her elbow on the table with her hand on her forehead wearily.
“Looking for me?” I questioned. “Why?”
She smiled at me a little and said, “Dorothy asked me to look for you,”
“Who‟s Dorothy?”
She smirked a little, but I found nothing funny about this situation, “Isadora… Dorothy… She is
your mother, darling,”

“You sure?” I felt really stupid for saying that afterwards, but I could never take things seriously
at times.
Chazelle giggled, “Yes, I think I‟m a hundred percent sure she‟s your mother,”
“Really? And how do you know anyway?” I retorted through narrowed eyes.
“I know because…” Her cheek leaned on her fist and her other hand tapped lightly on the table.
“She told me,”
“Told you? Why would she tell you? Who are you?”
“Okay, you really want to know who I am?”
I groaned annoyed, “I think we just established that,”
She lifted herself up from the slump she was in and said boldly, “Alright then, Izzi. I‟m your
grandmother.”
