 Flipkart is an
Indian e-
commerce
company
amongst the
popular sites for
online marketing
business.
 Flipkart.com was
founded on 5th Sept
2007. The website
was launched on 15th
Oct 2007.
 Sachin Bansal (right)
and Binny Bansal
(left) started
flipkart.com. Both of
them are computer
science graduates
from IIT-Delhi from the
2005 batch.
 Headquarters are in
Bangalore, Karnataka.
There were two major challenges faced by
them:
1. To get tie up with major book vendors.
2. To get the approval for credit-card payment
gateway.
 Flipkart runs all its software on Linux - Debian. The
website is primarily built on PHP. There are a lot of
behind the scene services and systems, apart from
the Website. Most of them run on the JVM but are
not necessarily built on Java, though Java is very
popular.
 For storage, MySQL is the most popular choice.
Memcached is the primary cache layer. All the top
NoSQL datastores have been evaluated at Flipkart
and some are used in production.
.
 Months after
launching the
website, the
company sold its
first book on
flipkart.com
—John Woods' A few
Leaving Microsoft
to Change the
World.
.
Flipkart's product range includes the
following:
Books
Pens & Stationery
underwears
Mobile Phones, Tablets & Accessories
Computers, Laptops and Accessories
Clothing
Watches, Bags and Wallets
Footwear
Beauty & Personal Care
Cameras and Accessories
Sports and Fitness
Software
Home & Kitchen
Gaming
Music, Movies & Posters
Baby Care and Toys
Audio Players
and a lot more range of products
 Flip kart has added a prepaid wallet feature
to its e-commerce platform that allows
shoppers t store money on the site and use it
to purchase items , without having to reach
for their credit card for each transaction,
according to a media nama report.
 Also it had experienced 2 million unit sales
and 4 million unique visitors per month with
sales growing at 25% per month, eyeing a
$50million run rate as reported by Tech
crunch.
 There has been large news papers ads ,TVCs
and a lot of web ads.
Initially funded by the bansals
themselves with 4lakh(INR).
Flip kart has since then raised two
rounds of funding from venture
capital funds accel india(2009) and
tiger global management.
 Initially, they used word of mouth marketing
to popularise their company.
 Today, as per Alexa traffic rankings, Flipkart
is amongst the top 20 Indian Web sites and
has been credited with being India's largest
online bookseller with over 11 million titles on
offer.
