Finding a Rental Unit As a Pet Owner

One of the most difficult aspects of moving into a
rental unit is accepting the terms set by the owner,
such as no pets allowed. Finding a pet friendly rental
can be a challenge and should begin as early in the
rental process as possible, as it can take time to find
a suitable location.
3. Several local and national search engines
have been designed to provide pet owners
with workable living environments, while
general rental websites often feature a pet
filter. Local veterinarians’ offices and The
Humane Society of the United States can
also provide assistance. Many landlords
and property owners will neglect to
mention whether or not they accept
animals, so making a simple phone call can
sometimes turn a no-pet rental into a new
home for your dog or cat.
4. Even a listing that indicates that pets are not
welcome will sometimes make compromises
for them. Renters should understand that a
property owner is likely unwilling to accept
animals due to negative experiences in the
past. With this in mind, selling one’s self as
mature and pet as well trained can turn a “no”
into a “yes.” Most importantly, a renter should
never sneak a pet into an apartment against
management’s wishes. This action gives other
pet owners a bad reputation and can result in
loss of the rental or, worse, the furry
companion.
