Far out in the sea lived a fish. No ordinary fish, however.He was the mostbeautiful fish in theentire ocean.His scales shimmeredwith all the colours ofthe rainbow.
The other fish admired his colourful scales and called him Rainbow Fish."Come on, play withus, Rainbow Fish!" ButRainbow Fish wasproud and swam pastthem.
A little blue fish swamalong behind him."Rainbow Fish, wait forme! Please give me oneof your glittering scales.They are so beautiful andyou have got so many!"
"Give you one of myscales? What are youthinking of?", criedRainbow Fish. "Getaway from me!"Shocked, the little bluefish swam away.
Still excited, he told hisfriends about it. Fromthen on nobody wantedany more to do withRainbow Fish.They turned away whenhe swam past them
What use wereRainbow Fish’sbeautiful scales, ifthey were no longeradmired by anyone?Now he was theloneliest fish in theentire ocean!One day he poured outhis sorrow to thestarfish. "I’m sobeautiful. Why doesn’tanyone like me?"
"In a cave behind thecoral reef lives the wiseoctopus. Perhaps he canhelp you," the starfishadvised him.
Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was very dark here. He could hardly see anything.Then suddenly he sawtwo glowing eyes.
“I have been expecting you,"said the octopus in a deepvoice. "The waves have told meyour story. Listen to my advice:give every fish one of yourglittering scales. Then you maynot be the most beautiful fish inthe ocean, but you will behappy again."
"But ..." Rainbow Fish began to say, but octopus had already disappeared in a dark cloud of ink."Give away my scales? Mybeautiful glittering scales? “thought Rainbow Fish,horrified."Never! No. How could I behappy without them?"
Suddenly he felt thelight touch of a fin. Thelittle blue fish was back!"Rainbow Fish, please,don’t be angry. Pleasegive me one of yourglittering scales, a smallone."Rainbow Fish hesitated."A very, very smallscale, he thought. Whynot, I will hardly missit."
Rainbow Fishcarefully pulled offthe very smallestof his glitteringscales. "Here, I’llgive you this one!But now leave mein peace!"
"Thank you, thank youvery much!" burbled thelittle blue fish excitedly."You are kind, RainbowFish."Rainbow Fish felt quitestrange.He watched the littleblue fish for a long timeas he swam awayhappily through thewater with his glitteringscale, turning this wayand that.

RainbowFish shared out his scalesand felt happier andhappier as he did so.Finally Rainbow Fish hadonly one glittering scaleleft. He had given away allthe others! And he washappy, happier than he hadever been!
