COVID- 19 RECESSION
• The COVID-19 recession is a severe global economic crisis which
has caused a recession in some nations and in others a depression.
It is the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression.
• The first major sign of a recession was the collapse of markets
during the 2020 stock market crash, which began in late
February and lasted through March.
• The recession has seen unusually high and rapid increases in
unemployment in many countries. The developing world is also
being affected by a drop in remittances, exacerbating global food
crises.
• The recession saw a drop in the price of oil triggered by the 2020
Russia–Saudi Arabia oil price war; the collapse of tourism, the
hospitality industry, and the energy industry; and a significant
downturn in consumer activity in comparison to the previous
decade. 6

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF
COVID- 19 PANDEMIC IN INDIA
• The IMF predicted the growth rate of India in the financial year
of 2020–21 as 1.9%, but in the following financial year, they predict
it to be 7.4%. IMF also predicted that India and China are the only
two major economies that will maintain positive growth rates.
However the prediction later turned out to be wrong.
• IMF revised India's growth rate to -4.5%, a historic low. However,
IMF said India's economy is expected to bounce back in 2021 with
a robust 6% growth rate.
• The National Statistical Office (NSO) released the data, which
revealed that the country's GDP contracted by 23.9 % in the first
quarter of 2020–21 financial year. The economic contraction
followed the severe lockdown to contain the COVID-19 pandemic,
where an estimated 140 million jobs were lost.

POLITICAL IMPACT OF
COVID- 19
• Sovereignty
M. Nicolas Firzli, director of the
World Pensions Council (WPC)
and advisory-board member at
the World Bank Global
Infrastructure Facility (GIF),
refers to the pandemic as "the
Greater Financial Crisis", that
will "bring to the surface pent-
up financial and geopolitical
dysfunctions ... [many] national
economies will suffer as a
result, and their political
sovereignty itself may be
severely eroded".

• Civil rights and democracy
Iran, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, and
Yemen banned the printing and
distribution of newspapers. On 30
March, the parliament of Hungary
granted Prime Minister Viktor
Orban the power to rule by decree
for an indefinite period.
