officer, you have to write the Civil Services Exam, which UPSC conducts every year.

fact UPSC has laid down a clear application procedure for this exam. To become an IAS, IPS, or IFS
officer, you have to write the Civil Services Exam, which UPSC conducts every year. Civil Services
Exam is the common exam conducted to recruit suitable candidates for IAS, IPS, IFS, Group 1 and Group
2 services. This exam has 3 stages. 1) Preliminary exam in May and its result usually in August. 2) Mains
Exam in October-November and result in the following Jan-Feb and 3) Interview in March-April and
final result in May.
Notification for the exam will come any time after January. Notification will be advertised in the UPSC
website and Employment News weekly and information about the notification will be published in all
most all dailies.
Candidates are required to apply online; detailed instructions for filling up online applications are
available on the abovementioned website. The applicants are required to submit only single application;
however, if due to any unavoidable situation, if he/she submits another/multiple applications, then he/she
must ensure that application with the higher RID (Registration ID) is complete in all respects like
applicants’ details, examination centre, photograph, signature, fee etc. The applicants who are submitting
multiple applications should note that only the applications with higher RID shall be entertained by the
Commission and fee paid against one RID shall not be adjusted against any other RID.
All candidates, whether already in Government Service, Government owned industrial undertakings or
other similar organizations or in private employment should submit their applications direct to the
Commission. Persons already in Government Service, whether in a permanent or temporary capacity or as
work charged employees other than casual or daily rated employees or those serving under the Public
Enterprises are however, required to submit an undertaking that they have informed in writing their Head
of Office/Department that they have applied for the Examination. Candidates should note that in case a
2. communication is received from their employer by the Commission withholding permission to the
candidates applying for/appearing at the examination, their application will be liable to be
rejected/candidature will be liable to be cancelled.
While filling in his/her Application Form, the candidate should carefully decide about his/her choice of
centre for the Examination. If any candidate appears at a centre other than the one indicated by the
Commission in his/her Admission Certificate, the papers of such a candidate will not be evaluated and
his/her candidature will be liable to cancellation.
Candidates are not required to submit along with their applications any certificate in support of their
claims regarding Age, Educational Qualifications, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward
Classes and Physically disabled etc. which will be verified at the time of the Main examination only. The
candidates applying for the examination should ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility conditions for
admission to the Examination. Their admission at all the stages of examination for which they are
admitted by the Commission viz. Preliminary Examination, Main (Written) Examination and Interview
Test will be purely provisional, subject to their satisfying the prescribed eligibility conditions. If on
verification at any time before or after the Preliminary Examination, Main (written) Examination and
Interview Test, it is found that they do not fulfill any of the eligibility conditions, their candidature for the
examination will be cancelled by the Commission.
If any of their claims is found to be incorrect, they may render themselves liable to disciplinary action by
the Commission in terms of Rule 14 of the Rules for the Civil Services Examination, 2013 .
Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available in the UPSC website. Candidates will
be required to complete the Online Application Form containing two stages viz.
Part-I and Part-II as per the instructions available in the above mentioned site through drop down menus.
The candidates are required to pay a fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees Hundred only) (excepting
Female/SC/ST/PH candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) either by remitting the money in
any branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India/State Bank of Bikaner
& Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore
or by using any Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.
3. Before start filling up on Online Application, a candidate must have his photograph and signature duly
scanned in the .jpg format in such a manner that each file should not exceed 40 KB and must not be less
than 3 KB in size for the photograph and 1 KB for the signature. The Online applications (Part I and II)
can be filled within the period notified for the purpose, after which link will be disabled. One important
point, don’t wait for the last date for submission of your online application. Heavy online traffic may
affect your chances.
