The Religion of Haiti <ul><li>Religion in Haiti is primarily Catholic, but includes voodoo for most citizens </li></ul><ul><li>Although regarded as sacrilege by some of the Protestant Catholics in Haiti, Voodoo is widely practiced and integrated into Catholic worship </li></ul><ul><li>Voodoo is usually practiced on family plots on private land </li></ul>

The Religion of Haiti Continued <ul><li>Haitians were able to mix the two religions, Catholicism and voodoo, because they were similar in that they both believe in a supreme being and the existence of evil spirits </li></ul><ul><li>A voodoo ritual begins with a Roman Catholic prayer then the attendees begin to dance to a drummer’s beat </li></ul><ul><li>The voodoo religion in Haiti came over with African slaves </li></ul>

The Religion of Haiti Continued <ul><li>Contrary to popular belief and the media, Voodoo is not about zombies and sorcery </li></ul><ul><li>Centered around “family spirits” which protect children in exchange for ceremonies where food is offered </li></ul><ul><li>The family spirits can cause illness if they are displeased, so voodoo is used to diagnose and treat these illnesses </li></ul>
