strange things because we still want that thing. It can be stressful and
difficult.

heroin addicts and alcoholics.

escape, people get crushed
and die.

More than 1400 died at a
stampede at Mecca in Saudi
Arabia in 2015.
Stampedes are
often started
by fires or gun
shots.
21. Typhoid Mary ไทฟอยด์
• She worked as a cook in New York from 1900 to 1907.
• She had typhoid disease, but she didn’t have symptoms and didn’t
get sick.
• At least 51 people got typhoid from her, and 3 died.
She never washed her hands after using the
bathroom and before making food. The
police told her to stop making food for
people, but she didn’t want to stop! They
had to put her in jail so she couldn’t make
more people sick!
22. Genie Wiley- The girl who
didn’t learn a language.
Genie was abused by her
father for 13 years.
He didn’t feed her enough, so
she was very small.
He locked her in a dark room
and tied her to a toilet. No
one talked to her. He beat her
if she made sound.
After the police saved her,
scientists studied her and
tried to teach her how to talk.
She never could speak more
than a few words.
23. Lie detector tests (polygraph)
It measures things like blood
pressure, pulse, and breathing to
see if you are lying.
If you are calm and relaxed, it will
not know you are lying and you can
beat the test.
They are not a good test, but police
use it because most people do not
know that it is not good.
