 Gul Moonis, MD, is an award winning educator, radiologist, and researcher
whose work has appeared in a number of publications, including the
American Journal of Neuroradiology and Radiology. Dr. Gul Moonis’
current research interests center on exploring the use of radiological
imaging in diagnosing problems in the inner ear.

 The most complex part of the auditory system, the inner ear comprises
three interrelated structures: the cochlea, vestibule, and three fluid-filled
semicircular canals. While the bony cochlea is the component of the inner
ear responsible for hearing, the vestibule and surrounding canals play an
important role in helping one maintain a sense of balance.

 Conditions affecting the inner ear can cause a range of issues, including
hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus. Because the inner ear is not accessible
to direct examination, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) scans are often needed to diagnose the cause of
these symptoms.
