Mapping Your World
Aerial imagery is an inte-
gral aspect of GIS, allowing
us to remotely and accurately
track patterns and changes
over time. This example
shows how rainfall effects
drought-ridden landscapes
and flora. The desert in Cali-
fornia is bursting with wild-
flowers thanks to above aver-
age rainfall after five years of
drought. To read and see

Library Planning
Joe Kane, our Director, recently presented to the
Library Board at their strategic planning retreat. The
topic was how the library could best serve the grow-
ing community with new programs, outreach, or fa-
cilities. The group discussed the location and rate of
new housing growth in Georgetown and the county
as a whole. The Board requested assistance in map-
ping high growth areas with additional data such as
age, income, education levels, and household de-
mographics. That work will continue, but the map
to the right was created for the Board’s use that
shows where single-family home building has been
occurring over the last four years. Visit https://

Farewell note from Megan Chan
It’s been a great pleasure to work for the Georgetown-Scott County
Planning Commission. I want to thank my coworkers, project collabora-
tors, frequent office visitors, and applicants for all of your hard work to
make the community stronger. I am excited for Scott County’s continued
growth and wish you success in the future. While I will miss everyone, I
am very excited to start this next chapter of my life. My husband and I are relocating to
Rochester, Minnesota where he will start a residency program at the Mayo Clinic. We
are also expecting our first child on July 4th
and can’t wait to meet our little one. Wish-
ing you all a wonderful summer, and a fond farewell.
Planners attend annual KAPA Conference
The Spring KAPA Conference provided many informational
sessions regarding public engagement, legal review, ethics in
consultant selection, master planning major road and residential
projects, downtown planning, data in comprehensive planning,
and many more. All the presenters shared valuable information
that Planning staff will use moving forward.
On Friday, May 19, Megan Chan represented our Planning
Commission on a panel to discuss ‘in-house’ comprehensive
plan updates for small/rural communities. The session was well received, and sparked a
lively discussion from all in attendance. Planners from Barren, Bourbon, Clark, and
Scott Counties spoke about their successes and challenges in updating their comprehen-
sive plans, what they learned going forward, and answered questions from the audience.
