Mapping Your World
Itās been a busy summer for the GIS
department! Theyāve continued to pro-
duce maps and provide services, all while
in the process of a server migration and
database upgrade. Recently created or in
the process of being made are maps for
the Stamping Ground Planning Session,
Traffic Study Maps of northeast George-
town, City Parking Lot map to assist the
City Engineerās office in mapping indi-
vidual parking spaces, and a variety of
maps for the School Board. GIS is also
compiling street data to be used with the
City Engineerās new Micro Paver soft-
ware that will aid in reporting pavement
condition and determining which areas of
town are the highest priority for repair.
The 2016 Comprehensive Plan
The start of the 2016 Comprehensive Plan update is now here. It is anticipated that
the public kick-off will begin with a visioning meeting sometime in October, where the
public will be invited to discuss the challenges we face, explore our common sense of
identity, and define our collective vision for the future. The purpose will be to under-
stand who we are as a community, reflect on our roots, our values, our strengths and
challenges.
The discussion will be very broad, but through open dialogue we can better clarify
how we can plan for growth that will reflect our values and allow us to maintain our
desired quality of life. The Comprehensive Plan, in simple terms, is a plan illustrated
in maps, words, or graphics that serves as the local public policy guide for future
growth. Zoning or other land use tools are then created or amended to implement the
Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan also includes a Transportation element that establishes
priorities on how and where we invest in roads and transportation infrastructure to sup-
port our land use goals. We also must identify those future community facilities in-
vestments needed to serve existing and future growth within the upcoming 5-year plan-
ning period. Of course there is much more to it, but we know that first we need a plan
if we are to focus investment in a way that aligns with our goals for the future.
We anticipate in the next year and a half you will help guide our work by joining in
this community effort!
Weāre excited about the new library
addition! Their āmovingā target
opening date is March/April of 2016.
