Dr. Nathan Lachowsky, an epidemiologist and Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy, University of Victoria, launched a pilot community mapping study in 2017, partnering with the Vancouver Island Health Authority, AIDS Vancouver Island, Vancouver Island People with AIDS Society, the Pacific AIDS Network and UVicโs Map Shop. Community mapping activities were hosted at pride festivals in 7 communities on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada in the summer of 2018 towards improving health and safety for guys into guys, including gay, bi, queer, pan, trans and 2 spirit men.
A private Google My Map was created with community identified, services, resources and stories of peoples experiences.
These are examples of some of the tools created, localizing and adapting Green Map System icons and pattern language specific to the Vancouver Island LGBTQ2+ community. They include posters, banners, icon stickers, story capture sheets etc.
Out of Dr. Lachowskyโs initial community mapping pilot came a 4 year project called Our Community Health Initiative launched in 2019. The project aims to improve health, access to services and safety for the trans, two-spirit and non-binary communities across British Columbia.
O_CHI is a partnership with the Rainbow Health Co-operative, Victoria Native Friendship Centre, School of Public Health and Social Policy and Map Shop at the University of Victoria.
Tools, resources, methodologies and a manual are being piloted and developed through the UVic Geography departments community mapping class. Providing an action-based, community-engaged, co-learning experience for students, faculty, staff and community. Taught by Dr. Crystal Tremblay with support from Ken Josephson (Map Shop lab coordinator), Rhianna Nagel (UVic community-engaged learning coordinator), the project has and will continue to engage cohorts of students each semester in geography and other departments and faculties.
