Catalysts speed up chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. There are two main types of catalysts: homogeneous catalysts, which are dissolved in the same phase as the reactants, and heterogeneous catalysts, which are in a different phase than the reactants and usually as a solid. Heterogeneous catalysts are more commonly used in industrial processes.
