2. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:
Iron Island is located in the ATLANTIC
OCEAN next to the African coasts (belongs
to Spain). Its latitude is 27 ° 44'N and
longitude is 18 º 03'W.
3. HOW WAS FORMED?
The iron island, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is an island
of volcanic origin. The estimated geological age of 1.12 million
years , making it the youngest Canary Island . Unlike the rest
of the islands , which are located in a third phase of creation,
El Hierro has continued over the first . When magma broke
the seafloor , a gap was created in a "Y " for which started out
lava. The island was formed by taking the form of " Y" left by
the gaps in the seabed. The lava flows covered the coastal
areas of the south and west of the island , but also in the
north.
4. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Recently, the volcano El Hierro in the Canary Islands ,
has experienced a seismic swarm beneath its base. At
the end of 2011 exceeded 700 tremors.Most of these
movements have had magnitudes of about 2 ( + /
-0.5 ) and grouped under El Hierro , while the depth
of these earthquakes has been only between 9 and 16
miles.

6. CONSEQUENCES:

water. The fishermen of La Restinga and the
Cabildo de El Hierro agreed in 2011 to review
the situation by passing the coast of the island

7. Economic disaster: Tourism is down 70% while many
retailers have decided to close their businesses at
the low number of visitors.
