3. IPC STANDARDS/GUIDELINES
The Ebola outbreak highlighted problems with the Sierra
Leone (SL) health system.
•Lack of IPC infrastructure, including
•Lack of appropriate personal protection equipment
(PPE) at healthcare facilities
•Lack of adequate hand hygiene stations
•Inadequate system for medical waste
•No concept of screening/triage
•Lack of IPC knowledge among HCWs
•No IPC policies Changes to Health System Since Outbreak

4. SCREENING at Non Ebola Health care facilities
Screening of patients before and during
admission in the hospitals, to ensure we are
not missing potential EVD cases and exposing
the HCW to new cases of Ebola
- Screening areas at the entrance of hospitals and
PHU´s
- Need of Isolation Units in hospitals and PHU´s to
test for EVD.
- If negative, referral ways to send them to the
General hospital
- Daily Screening of inpatients to identify any case
of EVD admitted
- Standard precautions for the health care workers
to minimize exposure to fluids during the EVD
epidemic.

5. Segregation of waste in the hospitals
- Need of waste bins and plastic bags in the wards for patients
waste
- Standard precautions for cleaners/hygienist to mange the
waste safely
- Avoid common places to deposit waste in open areas
- Avoiding the burning of waste without separation
of sharp, medical and general waste
- Safe Incineration of Ebola related waste
- Need of a specific area to keep the ashes produced in the
incineration
- Need of a safe system of water drainage coming from the
areas in contact with fluids from suspected cases
