Module Catalogue Demonstration Matthew Bull and Nicholas Thurston
Introduction Background Objectives of the module catalogue Handbook information and how the catalogue works Demonstration Programme Factory – the bigger picture
Background 2008-09 2009-10 2010-11 Module Handbook editor and pdf/print export On-line module catalogue Drupal module editor and data exports 2011 Prospectus data upload On-line prospectus Drupal prospectus editor and data exports Programme Handbook information upload Drupal programme editor and data exports Content Management System: Programme Factory
Objectives of module catalogue Single re-usable source of module information More efficient and consistent editing, storage and sharing of module descriptions Searchable web pages to help students choose modules Acts as a template for prospectus, programme handbooks and programme and module specification processes
Handbook information as data Module textual info such as synopsis or learning outcomes are in a database Editor interface to allow departments to change the information Automated processes take textual info and merge with Student Data System and Timetabling data Output is web pages and print-ready formats
Current handbook production Many different handbooks in the University: faculty, department, short-term, flexible-learning, etc. Each has different deadlines, groups of modules, and print formats, which when presented on the web can be confusing to students Difficult to search
Current handbooks on web To preserve existing module handbooks on the web, we have introduced the term ‘collection’ to describe subsets of all the modules on offer e.g. Humanities Stage 1 Social Sciences Stage 2&3 Short-term modules Computing Stage 1
How it works SDS xml web pages Nightly transfer Timetabling Module Handbook data Web styling and search functionality Module Handbook Editor
