- 2. Teaching in a digital world • Emerging technology has had a huge impact on how students interact and learn. • Students are exposed to technology everywhere. • Computers have a growing role in education. • Teachers can use these tools to enhance learning and build life skills.
- 3. Advantages of Computers in the Classroom • Multimodal learning. • Make concepts more engaging and meaningful. • Provide instant feedback. • Allows for differentiation • Work at different speeds and levels. • Engages students in a fun or creative ways. • Builds practical real-world skills.
- 4. Disadvantages of Computers in the Classroom • Not good for youngest learners. • Less physical activities • Limited social interactions. • Less tactile stimulation. • Harder to keep students focused and on task. • Time, costs, and resources.

Integrating computers in the classroom • Technology does not replace pedagogy. • Technology should support learning objectives and instruction. • Use to scaffold student learning. • Ask “how does this help the students learn?” • Look for applications that encourage discovery, exploration, problem solving and open responses.

- Teaching in the 21st century – a world of emerging digital technologies:Computers, cell phones, video games, iPods, and other digital media have an impact on how students interact and learn.Students are exposed to technology everywhere – inside and outside of school.Computers have had a growing role in classroom activities and instruction.Teachers can use these digital tools to enhance learning and build important computer literacy skills in the process.
- Advantages of using computers in the classroom:Computers can help children learn in a multimodal manner – visual, auditory, interactive.Using computers allows for real-world applications or examples. Computers can help make concepts more engaging, less abstract and more meaningful.Computers can provide instant communication and feedback to students and educators.Allows teachers to differentiate for students who learn at a different paces and different ways.Computer-based instruction allows students to learn or work at their own pace.Engages students in a fun or creative ways.Builds practical real-world skills.
- Disadvantages of using computers in the classroom:Before age 3, children in sensorimotor stage learn best by being active.Sedentary computer activities take children away from physical activities and social interactions.Computer-based activities can provide less tactile stimulation.Students may have difficulty maintaining focus and staying on task. Students are not as good at multitasking as they think.Technology allows students to be constantly connected to peers and social stimulus.Can take more time or resources to set-up and implement.
- Tips for integrating computers in the classroom:Computers are merely a tool for instruction – not a replacement. Technology does not replace pedagogy.Technology should support learning objectives and instruction.Constructivist approaches favor technology that scaffold student learning and engagement – giving students more control over their own learning.Ask “how does this help the students learn?”Use a variety of tools to encourage a multimodal approach to learning. Look for applications that encourage discovery, exploration, problem solving and open responses.Provide students with activities that ensure they will have positive beginning computer experiences.
- Tips for using computers with students:Don’t assume students know how to do things on the computers just because they appear comfortable or confident using computers.Build sense of self-efficacy with technology . Avoid using too much jargon when explaining tasks, however introduce proper terms to build computer literacy.Make sure expectations are clear. Maintain focus.Keep directions simple. With technology constantly changing, teach a variety of methods to do something. Try to build understand of logic rather than rote memorization of tasks. Focus on the process, not merely the product.
