There is no one like me in books, in movies, conferences, products I use or even at work And how I am depicted in the media is just a misrepresentation that makes an enemy out of me. This is the thing with representation. Seeing yourself, your experience, your people’s experience in the places and positions that matters the most in this world is critical to meaningful civic engagement. Representation provides the opportunity for your existence to be acknowledged in this world. Sadly sometimes we do see representation with a specific negative narrative. While Positive representation is always possible, many have been denied access to it. Everyday, black, Asian, brown, gay, minority and marginalised groups are educated without seeing themselves in the curriculum or the environment instead hear about the greatness of others. When you think about it you can see a pattern that feeds into creating a culture of prejudice. Positive representation matters because It also helps to erase the unconscious biases that we all have and fuel our everyday interactions, as friends, colleagues, or our new hiring candidate.
