2. Young people are described as tomorrow's leaders, offering fresh perspectives and energy
as well as the willingness to learn. Yet the media often treat youth as money makers for
their next story, describing events of shoplifting, graffiti and violence.
The media frequently, misrepresent young people in media stories, there are very few good
stories on young people that hit the national newspapers, therefore stereotypes of young
people are, trouble makers who have little value to society. This negative stereotype
creates distance between youth and other members in society.
The media have the ability to report positively on young people, celebrating their
achievements and goals whilst still meeting their key aim of reporting accurately and fairly,
but the media professionals decide what is 'newsworthy' based on a variety of values
including impact, conflict and timeliness and what sells more, which is usually the
shockingly bad rather than the good aspects.
The affect this has on young people means that they suffer in society when out, socialising
they get talked about and looked at constantly being judged and compared to stereotypical
young people. Employers may avoid young people because of their bad representation.
3. Skins shows young people as chaotic, emotional beings by reinforcing a common
stereotype.
Channel 4 took a bold step on behalf of teenage Britain. It set about creating a show that would
not just reflect a generation, but also refuse to patronise it.
Paul Flynn , reported at how appalled he was at the tv drama, he spoke on behave of young
people and said the show included every bad aspect of a teenager it could and missed out
every good one, including drugs, sex, violence, bitching, school drop outs. He also
reported at how appalled he was that the drama displayed these in humour and had a
sense of ‘coolness’ to it and then the drama covered the distressing issue of anorexic and
displayed this in some ‘cool’ way which is not a good representation of young people or a
leading example.
The programme left many parents asking ‘is this really what young people get up to’ it
caused a great up roar.
4. social networking an d young people are usually reported very negatively in the media, the
representation of young people and social networking is that of a stereotypical teenager.
With hundreds of thousands of young people having a face book account, its hard to
believe it all can be bad but with stories like those below constantly on front pages its
obvious why the attitude to young people is a bad one.
5. Its well known of young people, meeting other people online, and this is where the main
vulnerability stereotype of young people come from, as young people seem to be dazed
and naive when it come to talking on the internet. Paedophiles are disguising themselves
as young people and chatting to other young people drawing them in, and sharing details
and meeting up. But this only happens to a select few compared the amount of face book
users and it is something that not just young people could get mixed up in. Its also been
recently reported that young social networkers are putting them selves at risk of fraud, the
ICO reported that the material young people post on social networks such as Face book
and MySpace, is the reason for easy fraud.
The cost to a person's future can be very high if something undesirable is found ,the data
regulator's survey found that two thirds of those questioned accepted as friends on such
websites people they did not even know.
Some 60% posted their date of birth, a quarter put their job title and almost one in 10 gave
their home address.
ICO deputy commissioner David Smith said: "Many young people are posting content
online without thinking about the electronic footprint they leave behind.
6. The representation of youths is portrayed in a very stereotypical way. The film "Kidult
hood" looks at the life of young and poor teenagers in East London, giving us an insight
into the day in the life of these teenagers. It shows us how violence and gangs have a huge
impact on the lives of youths, even if youths aren't involved in this violence the film shows
us how a teenage girl is bullied by one of the main characters Sam. She later goes on to
hang herself, due to the bullying. The film is mainly based around violence, drugs, and
major consumption of alcohol. It piles all of the events a teenagers may see in the space of
a few months, into one day. The Daily Mirror described it as being "as potent as a shot of
vodka before breakfast – a harrowing, uncompromisingly bleak but thoughtful look at the
anguish of being young and poor in Britain". The most iconic thing about Kidult hood, is
that the crazy life it portrays the teenagers having, isn't that far away from the truth. It just
highlights the negative points, and uses these to base the teenage life around.
7. Media casts youth in a constant bad light
The media habitually portrays young people in an overwhelmingly negative light, according to
a survey of teenagers and press articles published today.
In the period under examination, one in three youth-related articles were about crime, and
young people were only quoted in 8% of stories.
The tabloids come in for particular criticism, with 90% of youth workers saying they portray a
negative image. The regional press was perceived as putting forward a particularly
"polarised" view.
Of stories dealing with young people and their activities, only 14% depicted a purely
In total, 32% of stories featuring young people were related to crime or antisocial behaviour.
Only 8% of stories related to positive achievements by young people.
positive image, while 15%, mostly in the quality press, took a neutral tone.
8. From being young people ourselves and from our research we can conclude that the overall
media representation of young people is a negative one. Our presentation shows, how
television, newspapers, and the internet create representation of young people, they focus
on the bad and therefore has created a stereotype. All though there are some bad
representations which are a reality there are also some good aspects of young people,
more so than negative, but these don't get show , because their not interesting so wont
sell.
