The national parks of Australia
Australia's six Commonwealth National Parks provide protection to some of the most stunning
aboriginal heritage and natural areas. The most prominent amongst them is Christmas Island
National Park, that sprawls over 85 square kilometers and boasts of a rich biodiversity. It has flush
natural habitats of tropical seabird rookeries, millions of red crabs and several endemic species.
As an isolated oceanic island distant from other land masses, Christmas Island is home to a high
proportion of rare flora and fauna, some of which are endangered. The park protects two wetlands
of international importance- the island's uniquely structured rainforest and a tiny but
environmentally important marine area.
The Kakadu National Park is owned by traditional Aboriginal families and is located 240 kilometers
in Australia's tropical north. Kakadu National Park is the nation's largest terrestrial national park and
is a venue of immense ecological and biological diversity.
2. It is home to more than a third of Australia's bird species and hosts several estuarine and freshwater
fish species as well. Kakadu occupies a pride of place in the list of world's ancient cultural heritage
and is educative and exciting for youngsters wanting to gain a deeper insight into the world of wild
nature.
