StarPack brief d
1. The Starpack Awards are organised
by IOM Communications Ltd and
endorsed by The Packaging Society,

[d]
More and more today design inspiration comes from nature (Biomimicry) – using nature and
biology as the design process. Your challenge is to design a bottle or container suitable for use
with any washing or cleaning products (washing up liquids, fabric conditioners, hand soaps,
toilet cleaner, multisurface cleaners). We are asking for a good handling and grip (usability),
visual shelf appeal (structural shelf presence) and environmental responsibility all to be taken into
consideration. Generate a design offering a unique new shape for a bottle or container for your
chosen product/s and show where you may have taken your inspiration from.
Usability factors are critical to the product and this is driven partly through design. Dosing
systems must be efficient especially for laundry products. If you look in the supermarkets
at the shelves of different bottles it will tell you typically the category you are in – laundry
products tend to be strongly curved, dish products more ‘female’ shaped, multi-purpose
bottles tend to have handles etc.

criteria for success
The panel of judges will mark the brief taking
into consideration:
ËË Consumer convenience: functionality –
opening, closing, handling
ËË Innovation: recognition of good ideas.
Creative use of materials
ËË Consumer market: relevance to the
target audience and predicted uses
ËË Display: shelf impact/shape, format and
graphics to give good shelf presence
ËË Model: one good quality mock up to
withstand transport and handling
ËË Development boards: 3 x A3 boards
showing concise and clear presentation
of ideas
ËË Environment: reduce, re-use, recycle
in addition the sponsor is specifying
ËË Grip – the design element here plays an
important factor. Larger bottles require
handles, smaller ones are more curved.
Grip zones and pinch grips can be
attractive.
ËË Marketing opportunities and visual shelf
appeal
ËË Practicality – does the bottle or container
design suit typical everyday user needs?
ËË Does the design show a practical
consideration for the supply chain
– manufacture, filling, storage and
transportation?
ËË Environmental responsibility – lightweight,
shelf life, recyclable material – this could
influence the design of the bottle you
choose.
materials to use
For the mock ups – any material / model is
acceptable. Where possible consider with
your final solution what material would be
used, should it be manufactured. Is this
sustainable?
