2. Red sees Andy and the other Prisoners
coming into the prison.
• Mid-Shot showing three
characters observing
the new characters
entering the Prison.
• Red and others are
making bets about the
new prisoners.
• Everyone thinks badly
about Andy.
3. Point of View as Prisoners arrive
• High-Angle shot showing
the different characters.
• Red describes Andy as
saying “A light breeze
could blow him [Andy]
over”
• High-angle shots are used
to show how insignificant
Andy and the other new
prisoners are in their
surroundings.
•
4. Crowd cheers on new prisoners.
• Over-the-Shoulder shot puts the
viewer in the shoes of the new
prisoners. In this shot we find out
how far other prisoners will go to
make the lives of other prisoners bad.
• The crowd treats the new prisoners
like a sporting fixture, and even refers
to them as horses.
• The crowd causes the new prisoners
to fear them, respect them. We see
that there is a social hierarchy in the
prison and Red is at the top of this
hierarchy.
• The significance of this shot is that
we get an idea of the treatment of
the new prisoners.
5. Andy’s reaction to his new
environment.
• Close-up showing Andy’s
distaste of the prison.
• Close-ups show the
emotions of a character.
• This close-up is important
because it shows Red’s first
impression of Andy. This is
significant because Red is
seen as the top dog of the
prison. He is the man who
can get things, but like Andy
his attitudes change
throughout the film.
6. Red begins the betting.
• Close-up shows how the new
prisoners are treated by the
existing inmates.
• Red starts creating bets
amongst the others, as he is
the “top dog”. The position of
the close-up shows Red as the
dominant character. This is
reinforced by fact that he is
placed on the far left, closest
to the camera.
• The overall significance of this
shot is that it establishes Red’s
position of power.
