Energy Security
Why Energy Security Is Important ?
• If you ask any person in Europe what he is
thinking about Ukraine’s situation about gas
price ,he would have few strong feelings
• If you ask another question like what if your
home become cold in winter he would
probably have stronger feelings than before
• Energy Security entered Nato’s agenda only
after Russia-Ukraine gas dispute of 2006
• Most European countries are dependent on
imported energy .Today almost %50 needs
import energy and it will be %70 in 2030
• Russia is key of supplier of natural gas and oil
• After 2008 Bucharest Summit Nato dedicated
itself to mandate energy security .
• Nato’s role in this area is mostly non-military
• Over the past years Nato’s energy security
agenda became more systematic and coherent
• Germany import 32% of its energy from Russia
and Poland import two thirds of its natural gas
from Russia
• Totally European countries import 25 % of its
energy from Russia and 45 % from Middle East
• In addition oil is found unstable areas of
Middle East and factor of USA and Europe
concern over energy security
Nato’s Energy Security Activities
• Enhancing strategic awareness of the security
• While NATO is not an energy institution,
energy developments affect the international
security environment and allies security
interests.As a result, NATO closely follows
relevant energy trends and developments and
seeks to raise its strategic awareness in this
area.
Consultations on energy security among Allies
and partner countries, intelligence-sharing, as
well as specific events, such as workshops,
table-top exercises, and briefings by external
experts.
• Nato also seek to ensure that its military
started to organize training courses
• Supporting Energy Infrastructure
• Energy infrastructure is also one of the most
vulnerable assets ,especially in conflict areas
• Sometimes terrorist and hostile states try to
attack energy infrastructure .For this reason
Nato want to increase energy protection
• Nato’s navies provides surveilance of maritime
routes
• Nato’s counter piracy operations is also make
an indirect contribution to energy security
• Enhancing Energy Efficiency in Military
• Enhancing energy efficiency in military
focuses reducing the energy consumption of
military vehicles and camps
• Work this area bring together experts to
examine proposing multinational projects
• A significant thing in this area adoption of
Nato’s ‘’Gree Defence’’ in February 2014 .
• It seeks to make NATO more operationally
effective through changes in the use of energy,
while saving resources and enhancing
environmental sustainability.
• Nato provides analyses of global energy
developments and organises workshop on
sharing best prices
Nato Energy Security Centre Of
Exellence
• It was created 2012 (ENSEC or COE) and it is
part of Nato
• Centres Of Exellence (COE) are nationally and
multinationally funded institutions that train
and educate leaders and specialist from Nato
members and partner countries
• Provide technical ,scientific and subject matter
in field of energy security
• Provide some solutions for environment
• Provide critical energy infrastructure in
concern of Nato
• Identify energy military threat
Turkey is one of the sponsoring nation
of Nato energy security centre of
exellence
