5. GSP’s Position on Senate Bill No. 553
On 19 July 2016, Senator Antonio V. Trillanes IV introduced SBN 553
entitled “An Act Regulating the Practice of Mining Engineering in the
Philippines, Repealing for the Purpose Republic Act Numbered Four
Thousand Two Hundred Seventy Four (RA No. 4274), as amended
entitled ‘Mining Engineering Law of the Philippines,’ and for other
Purposes.”
In its explanatory note, Sen. Trillanes mentioned, that it is important to
amend RA 4274 because:
“…….unauthorized activities have caused confusion in the
Philippine Mining Industry particularly among Registered Mining
Engineers because such activities tend to discriminate against
majority of Registered Mining Engineers and eliminate many of the
rights and privileges already granted to them by RA 4274 or the
Mining Engineering Act of 1965”.
6. GSP Submitted Position Papers to Senate, PRC, SEC and PSE
If SBN 553 will be passed, it is as if the creation of Reporting Codes will be
exclusive to Mining Engineers and its professional organization, to the
detriment of all other professionals and professional organizations. Further,
the bill is used to indirectly stop the passing or creation of any reporting
codes considering that before its implementation, an approval of two-thirds
(2/3) of all professional and registered mining engineers in good standing is
needed.

17. Philippine Hosting of
the 2020 Regional
Congress on Geology, Mineral Resources and
Energy in South East Asia
(“GeoSEA 2020”)
GeoSEA 2020, a Congress held every two
years, will be an excellent opportunity for
scientific and technical information exchange,
and to advance geoscience in multidisciplinary
fields in the petroleum, mining and energy
industries. Other possible collaborative
opportunities will be discussed like sharing
information on resources inventory, disaster
risk mitigation and competent person
certification/registration. The result will be a
comprehensive transfer of information that can
be valuable for management and technical
professionals, researchers, academics, and
students.
