Freemium is a business model where a basic or limited version of a product or service is provided for free, while premium or enhanced features are provided at a cost. It involves giving away core functionality for free to attract users, then converting some of those users to paying customers by selling premium upgrades or add-ons. This model works because digital goods have near-zero marginal costs of production and distribution, allowing companies to recoup costs from a small percentage of paying customers. Freemium can be applied to both digital and physical products by duplicating and distributing content digitally while selling related premium services or goods.
