The Jarrow Crusade was a protest march in 1936 by 200 unemployed men from Jarrow, England to London. Jarrow had been hit hard by the Great Depression after its shipyard closed in 1933, leaving unemployment at 72.9%. The men marched 291 miles over 31 days to petition the government for jobs and support for their families in Jarrow. When they arrived in London, the Prime Minister refused to see them. In the short term, the march had little impact, but it eventually led to the creation of two new industries in Jarrow in the long term. The march is now remembered as an important event in the history of the British labor movement.
