This case study describes the transformation of the Androscoggin Mill from an object of public opprobrium and con�ict to a show- case for environmental management. In the late 1980s, an 18- month strike had embittered workers and townspeople and left the mill’s reputation in tatters. In response to mill environmental violations, some of which were considered crimes by state regulators, the town of Jay passed its own environmental ordinance to control mill emissions. Early in the 1990s, new management, including two former corporate-level employ- ees, sought to change the mill’s business approach and turn the Androscoggin Mill into IP’s best environmental performer. The initial emphasis on establishing and maintaining compli- ance was expanded to include aggressive pollution prevention effor ts that led to cooperative projects with the Maine De- par tment of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and stakeholder groups. The mill’s approach in the 1990s evolved further to essentially follow prin- ciples of industrial ecology. New approaches focused on “clos- ing the loop” by �nding bene�cial uses for previously land�lled wastes, replacements for most hazardous chemicals, and re- ductions in solid and hazardous waste generation. The mill also pursued the establishment of symbiotic relationships with a facility that began using a mill by-product on-site and an on- site natural gas burning facility that provided par t of the mill’s steam demand. IP also established a public advisory committee in 1992 to advise management on operational and “big- picture” issues, which later included the application of sustain- ability criteria to the mill. Risky behavior causes worry and distress. Irritability can create all sorts of distressing situations. When a person is manic, they are in a state of dysfunction. Memory and responsibilities often fall to the backburner while the manic episode rides its course. Of all the things that define abnormal behavior, a manic episode can be especially dangerous to both the person experiencing it as well as the others around them because it involves risky behavior—which implies many things from gambling to drugs. Sliney, MS, LNHA, Barry University Background Mary Evelyn Greene, who has memory impairment, lives in a private room at Shady Brook Skilled Nursing Facility located in a beautiful suburb of a major metropolitan city. She has resided at Shady Brook for the past 18 months. Before moving into Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene lived independently in her own home with assistance from a private-duty nursing assistant and a housekeeper. She and her husband had resided together in this home for more than 50 years. Mrs. Greene is 89 years old and suffers from several health problems associated with aging. Mrs. Greene has one son, David Greene. David has the power of attorney to handle his mother’s health care and other personal affairs. David works as a trial attorney in one of the city’s largest and most prestigious law firms. He owns a large home in an upscale neighborhood and works hard to put two of his children through college and another one through medical school. His home is about an hour’s drive from his workplace and about 20 minutes from Shady Brook. David’s wife Barbara has never been close to her mother-in-law and has not shown much interest in her care.
