 Its popularityincreasedwhenEnglisharmyofficersstationedinIndiatransportedthe game toEngland.
 In Englanditwas called“badmintin”.
 Eventuallyitspreadtothe UnitedStates.
Safety
 Make sure to alwayshave a firmgripon the racket.
 Be careful notto hityour partnerwith the racket.
 Stay onyour owncourt.
 Stopplayingif othersenteryourcourt.
 If your birdgoesintoanothercourt, waituntil theirplaystops.
 Be careful andaware of yoursurroundings(poles,walls,etc.)
 The rackets are nottoys,so no foolingaround.
Equipment
 Racketsare fragile.

 Drive – A powerfullyhitforehandorbackhandstroke whichjustclearsthe topof the net.
-Difficulttoreturndue to the shuttle’sstraightline trajectory.
 Clear – A stroke whichsendsthe shuttle highoverthe opponentsheadanddropsnearthe backcourtboundary
line.
-Itmay be hit withandoverhandor underhandstroke.
-Canbe usedas offensive ordefensive play.
 Drop Shot– The shuttle isstrokedoverthe netso itdrops veryclose tothe net.

 The game isplayedupto 21 points
 Pointsare scoredonlyby the servingside.
 A pointisrewardedtothe servingside wheneverthe otherside commitsafault.
-If a faultis committedbythe servingside,the serverdoesnotscore a pointandlosesthe serve.
Doubles
 There are 21 pointsina doublesgame.
 Whenthe score is20 all,the side that reached20 firsthasthe optionof “setting”the game to5.
 Afterthe game has been“set”,the score is called“love all”andthe side thatfirstscores5 or 3 pointswinsthe
game.
 The optionto “set”the game mustbe made before the nextservice isdeliveredafterthe score hasreached20
all.
Singles
 There are 21 pointsina singlesgame.
 Whenthe score is20-20 the winneristhe playerwitha2 pointadvantage.
 If the score goesup to 29-29 the winneristhe firsttoreach 30.
Serving
Doubles
 Servingalwaysstartsfromthe rightcourt.
 You continue toserve aslongas you score.
 The servingside switchescourtsaftereachpoint.
 If a faultismade by the “in” side,the serverlosesthe serve.
-“In”side – the side thatis serving
 The side that starts the game onlyhas one service forthe firstinning.
-Meaning,onlyone partnerservesforthe firstinning.
 Afterthe firstinningeachside hastwoserves.
-Meaning,eachpartnerservesandcontinuestoserve aslongas theyscore.
-If a partner losesthe serve,the serve goestothe otherpartner.
Singles
 A playercan onlyscore while serving.
 Each time theyscore a point,theyswitchservice courts.
 Wheneverthe playersscore iszerooran evennumber,theyserve fromthe rightside servicecourt.
 Whenthe server’sscore isan odd numbertheyserve fromthe leftside service court.
General Rules
 Winnersof the firstgame must serve firstinthe nextgame.

Faults
 Overhandserves –

 If the server’sorreceiver'sfeetare notinthe correct service courtas the shuttle isserved.
 If the playertouchesthe netwiththeirracketor body.

 Failsto goover the net.
 Is hitby the otherteambefore itcrossesthe net.

Strategy
 Put youropponentonthe defensive.
 Hit the birdso that youropponents onlypossible returnisanupwarddirection.
 Hit the shuttle withanoverhandstroke wheneverpossible.

 Baseline –Anothername forthe back boundaryline.
 Bird– Officiallyknownasshuttlecock.Referredtoasshuttle.
 Block– Placingthe racketin frontof the shuttle andlettingitreboundintothe opponent’sside of the court.
 Carry – Holdingthe shuttle onthe racketduringa stroke.Alsocalleda“sling”or a “throw”.
