2.19 A plane wall 15-cm thick has a thermal conductivity given by therelation
k _ 2.0 0.0005T W/m K where T is in kelvin. If one surface of this wall is maintained
at 150°C and theother at 50°C, determine therate of heat transfer per square meter. Sketch thetemperature distribution
through the wall.
2.65 A large, 2.54-cm.-thick copper plateis placed between two air streams. The heat transfer coefficient on one side is 28
W/m2 K and on the other side is 57 W/m2 K. If the temperatureof both streams is suddenly changed from
38°C to 93°C, determine how long it will take for the copper plateto reach a temperatureof 82°C.
2.76 A 2.5-cm-thick sheet of plasticinitially at 21°C is placed between two heated steel plates that are maintained at
138°C. Theplastic is to be heated just long enough for its midplane temperatureto reach 132°C. If the thermal
conductivity of the plasticis 1.1 10_3 W/m K, the thermal diffusivity is 2.7 10_6 m/s, and the thermal resistance at the
interface between the plates and the plasticis negligible, calculate (a) the required heating time, (b) the temperatureat a
plane 0.6 cm from the steel plateat themoment theheating is discontinued, and (c) thetime required for theplastic to
reach a temperature of 132°C 0.6 cm from the steel plate.
2.3 Calculate the rate of heat loss per foot and thethermal resistance for a 6-in. schedule 40 steel pipecovered with a 3-
in.-thick layer of 85% magnesia. Superheated steam at 300°F flows inside thepipe( _ 30 Btu/h ft2 °F), and still air at
60°F is on theoutside (h _ 5 Btu/h ft2 °F).
2.7 Estimate the rate of heat loss per unit length from a 2- in.ID, OD steel pipecovered with high temperature insulation
having a thermal conductivity of 0.065 Btu/h ft and a thickness of 0.5 in. Steam flows in the pipe.
It has a quality of 99% and is at 300°F. Theunit thermal resistance at theinner wall is 0.015 h ft2 °F/Btu, theheat transfer
coefficient at the outer surface is 3.0 Btu/h ft2 °F, and the ambient temperature is 60°F.
2.10 A salesperson for insulation material claims that insulating exposed steam pipes in the basement of a large hotel will
be cost-effective. Supposesaturated steam at 5.7 bars flows through a 30-cm-OD steel pipewith a 3-cm wall thickness.
The pipeis surrounded by air at 20°C. Theconvection heat transfer coefficient on the outer surface of the pipeis
estimated to be 25 W/m2 K. The cost of generating steam is estimated to be $5 per 109 J, and the salesman offers to install
a 5-cm-thick layer of 85% magnesia insulation on thepipes for $200/m or a 10-cm-thick layer for
$300/m. Estimate thepayback time for thesetwo alternatives, assuming that the steam line operates all year long, and
make a recommendation to the hotel owner. Assume that thesurface of the pipeas well as the insulation have a low
emissivity and radiative heat transfer is negligible.
2.16 A standard 4-in. steel pipe(ID _ 4.026 in., OD _ 4.500 in.) carries superheated steam at 1200°F in an enclosed space
where a fire hazard exists, limiting theouter surface temperatureto 100°F. To minimize theinsulation cost, two materials
are to be used: first a high-temperature (relatively expensive) insulation is to be applied to the pipe, and then magnesia (a
less expensive material) will be applied on the outside. The maximum temperature of themagnesia is to be 600°F. The
following constants are known:
A,steam-side coefficient h _ 100 Btu/h ft2 °F
A,high-temperature
insulation
conductivity k _ 0.06 Btu/h ft °F
a, magnesia conductivity k _ 0.045 Btu/h ft °F
a,outside heat transfer
coefficient h _ 2.0 Btu/h ft2 °F
a,steel conductivity k _ 25 Btu/h ft °F
a,ambient temperature Ta _ 70°F
2.52 A 30-cm-OD pipewith a surface temperatureof 90°C carries steam over a distance of 100m. The pipeis buried with
its centerline at a depth of 1 m, theground surface is _6°C, and the mean thermal conductivity of the soil is
0.7 W/m K. Calculate the heat loss per day, and the cost of this loss if steam heat is worth $3.00 per 106 kJ. Also estimate
the thickness of 85% magnesia insulation necessary to achieve thesame insulation as provided by the soil with a totalheat
transfer coefficient of 23 W/m2 K on theoutside of the pipe.
2.59 A spherical shell satellite (3-m-OD, 1.25-cm-thick stainless steel walls) reenters the atmospherefrom outer space.
If its original temperature is 38°C, the effective average temperatureof the atmosphereis 1093°C, and the effective heat
transfer coefficient is 115 W/m2 °C, estimate the temperatureof the shell after reentry, assuming thetime of reentry is 10
min and the interior of the shell is evacuated.
2.62 The heat transfer coefficients for the flow of 26.6°C air over a sphere of 1.25 cm in diameter are measured by
observing the temperature-time history of a copper ball the same dimension. The temperatureof the copper ball (c _ 376
J/kg K, _ _ 8928 kg/m3) was measured by two thermocouples, one located in thecenter and the other near the surface.
The two thermocouples registered, within the accuracy of therecording instruments, the same temperatureat any given
instant. In one test run, the initial temperatureof the ball was 66°C, and thetemperature decreased by 7°C in 1.15 min.
Calculate the heat transfer coefficient for this case.
2.20 A plane wall, 7.5 cm thick, generates heat internally at the rate of 105 W/m3. One side of thewall is insulated, and the
other side is exposed to an environment at 90°C. The convectionheat transfer coefficient between thewall and the
environment is 500 W/m2 K. If the thermal conductivity of thewall is 12 W/m K, calculate the maximum temperaturein
the wall.
2.30 An electrical heater capable of generating 10,000 W is to be designed. The heating element is to be a stainless steel
wire having an electrical resistivity of 80 10_6 ohmcentimeter. The operating temperature of thestainless steel is to be no
more than 1260°C. The heat transfer coefficient at the outer surface is expected to be no less than 1720 W/m2 K in a
medium whose maximum temperature is 93°C. A transformer capable of delivering current at 9 and 12 V is available.
Determine a suitable size for the wire, the current required, and discuss what effect a reduction in the heat transfer
coefficient would have. (Hint: Demonstrate first that the temperaturedrop between the center and thesurface of the wire
is independent of thewire diameter, and determine its value.)

  • 1. 2.19 A plane wall 15-cm thick has a thermal conductivity given by therelation k _ 2.0 0.0005T W/m K where T is in kelvin. If one surface of this wall is maintained at 150°C and theother at 50°C, determine therate of heat transfer per square meter. Sketch thetemperature distribution through the wall. 2.65 A large, 2.54-cm.-thick copper plateis placed between two air streams. The heat transfer coefficient on one side is 28 W/m2 K and on the other side is 57 W/m2 K. If the temperatureof both streams is suddenly changed from 38°C to 93°C, determine how long it will take for the copper plateto reach a temperatureof 82°C. 2.76 A 2.5-cm-thick sheet of plasticinitially at 21°C is placed between two heated steel plates that are maintained at 138°C. Theplastic is to be heated just long enough for its midplane temperatureto reach 132°C. If the thermal conductivity of the plasticis 1.1 10_3 W/m K, the thermal diffusivity is 2.7 10_6 m/s, and the thermal resistance at the interface between the plates and the plasticis negligible, calculate (a) the required heating time, (b) the temperatureat a plane 0.6 cm from the steel plateat themoment theheating is discontinued, and (c) thetime required for theplastic to reach a temperature of 132°C 0.6 cm from the steel plate. 2.3 Calculate the rate of heat loss per foot and thethermal resistance for a 6-in. schedule 40 steel pipecovered with a 3- in.-thick layer of 85% magnesia. Superheated steam at 300°F flows inside thepipe( _ 30 Btu/h ft2 °F), and still air at 60°F is on theoutside (h _ 5 Btu/h ft2 °F). 2.7 Estimate the rate of heat loss per unit length from a 2- in.ID, OD steel pipecovered with high temperature insulation having a thermal conductivity of 0.065 Btu/h ft and a thickness of 0.5 in. Steam flows in the pipe. It has a quality of 99% and is at 300°F. Theunit thermal resistance at theinner wall is 0.015 h ft2 °F/Btu, theheat transfer coefficient at the outer surface is 3.0 Btu/h ft2 °F, and the ambient temperature is 60°F. 2.10 A salesperson for insulation material claims that insulating exposed steam pipes in the basement of a large hotel will be cost-effective. Supposesaturated steam at 5.7 bars flows through a 30-cm-OD steel pipewith a 3-cm wall thickness. The pipeis surrounded by air at 20°C. Theconvection heat transfer coefficient on the outer surface of the pipeis estimated to be 25 W/m2 K. The cost of generating steam is estimated to be $5 per 109 J, and the salesman offers to install a 5-cm-thick layer of 85% magnesia insulation on thepipes for $200/m or a 10-cm-thick layer for $300/m. Estimate thepayback time for thesetwo alternatives, assuming that the steam line operates all year long, and make a recommendation to the hotel owner. Assume that thesurface of the pipeas well as the insulation have a low emissivity and radiative heat transfer is negligible. 2.16 A standard 4-in. steel pipe(ID _ 4.026 in., OD _ 4.500 in.) carries superheated steam at 1200°F in an enclosed space where a fire hazard exists, limiting theouter surface temperatureto 100°F. To minimize theinsulation cost, two materials are to be used: first a high-temperature (relatively expensive) insulation is to be applied to the pipe, and then magnesia (a less expensive material) will be applied on the outside. The maximum temperature of themagnesia is to be 600°F. The following constants are known: A,steam-side coefficient h _ 100 Btu/h ft2 °F A,high-temperature insulation conductivity k _ 0.06 Btu/h ft °F a, magnesia conductivity k _ 0.045 Btu/h ft °F a,outside heat transfer coefficient h _ 2.0 Btu/h ft2 °F a,steel conductivity k _ 25 Btu/h ft °F a,ambient temperature Ta _ 70°F 2.52 A 30-cm-OD pipewith a surface temperatureof 90°C carries steam over a distance of 100m. The pipeis buried with its centerline at a depth of 1 m, theground surface is _6°C, and the mean thermal conductivity of the soil is 0.7 W/m K. Calculate the heat loss per day, and the cost of this loss if steam heat is worth $3.00 per 106 kJ. Also estimate the thickness of 85% magnesia insulation necessary to achieve thesame insulation as provided by the soil with a totalheat transfer coefficient of 23 W/m2 K on theoutside of the pipe. 2.59 A spherical shell satellite (3-m-OD, 1.25-cm-thick stainless steel walls) reenters the atmospherefrom outer space. If its original temperature is 38°C, the effective average temperatureof the atmosphereis 1093°C, and the effective heat transfer coefficient is 115 W/m2 °C, estimate the temperatureof the shell after reentry, assuming thetime of reentry is 10 min and the interior of the shell is evacuated.
  • 2. 2.62 The heat transfer coefficients for the flow of 26.6°C air over a sphere of 1.25 cm in diameter are measured by observing the temperature-time history of a copper ball the same dimension. The temperatureof the copper ball (c _ 376 J/kg K, _ _ 8928 kg/m3) was measured by two thermocouples, one located in thecenter and the other near the surface. The two thermocouples registered, within the accuracy of therecording instruments, the same temperatureat any given instant. One side of thewall is insulated, and the other side is exposed to an environment at 90°C. The convectionheat transfer coefficient between thewall and the environment is 500 W/m2 K. If the thermal conductivity of thewall is 12 W/m K, calculate the maximum temperaturein the wall. 2.30 An electrical heater capable of generating 10,000 W is to be designed. The heating element is to be a stainless steel wire having an electrical resistivity of 80 10_6 ohmcentimeter. The operating temperature of thestainless steel is to be no more than 1260°C. The heat transfer coefficient at the outer surface is expected to be no less than 1720 W/m2 K in a medium whose maximum temperature is 93°C. A transformer capable of delivering current at 9 and 12 V is available. Determine a suitable size for the wire, the current required, and discuss what effect a reduction in the heat transfer coefficient would have. (Hint: Demonstrate first that the temperaturedrop between the center and thesurface of the wire is independent of thewire diameter, and determine its value.)
