ING-IND/35 ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT
The Programme
The first part of this course focuses on the structural elements of energy
markets and their effects on firm performance and on social welfare. Then,
motivations and specific mechanisms of public intervention are discusses: the
accent is on the regulation of natural monopoly as well as on energy and
environmental policies. A description of the legal sources and of the main
instruments of energy law and regulation completes this second part. Finally,
optimal firm strategies are analysed, in several competitive frameworks and, in
particular, on power exchanges.

CFD FOR ENGINEERING ANALYSIS

ING-IND/10 TECHNICAL PHYSICS
The Programme
Many industrial sectors are deeply interested to CFD applications: power
generation, chemical engineering, automotive, aerospace, HVAC, thermal
management, up to the competitive sports. The main goal of the course is to
provide a good autonomy in managing the whole CFD cycle, with particular
attention to the analysis phase and the critical revision of the model. The
content of the theoretical lessons include a revision of the balancing equations
governing fluid flow in order to introduce the field of application for CFD.
Numerical methods for the solution of the partial derivative equations and the
numerical algorithms for spatial and temporal discretisation are treated.
Turbulence and combustion models are also introduced in order to transfer to the
students the knowledge of the working approach for CFD solvers and to build the
capability of critical analysis which is crucial for reaching a profitable usage
of CFD as a support technique for engineering design.

ING-IND/13 APPLIED MECHANICS FOR MACHINERY
The Programme
The basic knowledge of mechanical vibrations allows to analyze the dynamical
behavior of the machines like those used in power generation plants.
Applications in vibration control, flexural and torsional critical speeds and in

modeling of the system are described. Monitoring systems for machine
surveillance and diagnostics, with special regard to turbomachinery for power
plants, are presented, and the procedures for improving the machine behavior,
like balancing e.g., are described.
