1) Jesus suffered wounds on his head by wearing a crown of thorns to redeem humanity from curses, as thorns symbolize curses from disobedience, sins of past generations, worries, lusts, and other afflictions.
2) His face was struck and spat upon, fulfilling prophecy of the suffering servant and enabling our eyes to see and ears to hear God.
3) His side was pierced, opening a fountain for sin and uncleanness and creating a door for his bride the church to enter through his blood and cleansing water of baptism.
The Wounds of Jesus Christ Redeemed Us From Curses
1. Isaiah 52:14, ‘He was marred more than any man and His form more than sons of man’. Gal 3: 13, ‘Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us’ Wounds of Jesus Christ
2. His wounds on His Head: Mathew 27:29 , ‘When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!”’. It is not a customary for Romans to put a crown on Jesus. It is the plan of Devil. Jesus bore crown of Thorns on His Head. Because to redeem us from all curses. Thorn is a symbol of Curse. Curses are invoked through: Disobedience to God’s Commandment: Gen 3:17, ‘Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': " Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life’ Deut 28:15 , ‘But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you’. Generation & Traditional : Exodus 34:7, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation.’ Worries and cares : Mark 4:18-19 , ‘Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful’ Lust of the world: 1 John 2:16 , ‘For all that is in the world --- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life --- is not of the Father but is of the world’. 1 Peter 4:1 , ‘that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God’.
3. His wounds on His Face: Matthew 26:67 , ‘Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands’. Jesus took it to gladly from the hands of sinners. Isaiah 53:7 says ‘He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth’. The Blow was so hard, it made Him almost blind. The man who gave sight to many was made Blind. Why ? Our Eyes should see Jesus: Hebrews: 12:2 , ‘looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God’. We should look unto Him and let keep our Faith on HIM not on the religion or tradition or customs. Today we are unable to see Jesus because our eyes are full of evil and we are soaked in this worldly things. Psalms 119:37, ‘Turn away me eyes from looking at worthless things and revive me in your way’. Our Ears should be opened: They struck His face and made His ear deaf. Why ? Jesus took this pain for you and me. Our Ears should be opened to listen the voice of the Lord. Today, we have made our ears are opened for all evil things. Psalms 85:8 , ‘I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints’. Our Mouth should be opened: Psalms 22:15 records the agony when he received the beatings on his jaws. My strength dried up like a potsherd, my tongue clings to My jaws. Why ? We should always speak HIS love, goodness, grace and mercies to others. Ephesians 4:29-30 , ‘Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
4. His wounds on His side: John 19:34 , ‘But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out’. He was dead when the soldier pierced His side. The flow of blood and water is a symbolic fulfillment of Zechariah 13:1, “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.” A fountain was opened on His side and began to flow. Over the bleeding side of our Lord there might have been written, ‘Behold the fountain for all sin.’ We can view the wound in Jesus’ side as symbolic of a door of salvation. It can be compared it to the door in the side of Noah’s ark where eight persons and the animals entered to be saved from the flood. His side was pierced and a passage opened to his heart, so by his suffering we may look into his heart wounded with love for us, and pouring out itself for us; and that as a hole was made in Adam’s side to take out a wife, so a hole was made in his side to take in his beloved bride to his heart. Jesus opened His side for the Church and we are His wife. Rev 21:9 , ‘Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, "Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife’. Blood refers to ‘atonement’ and water refers to ‘cleansing’. He made His side opened for His Church through Blood and Cleansing of Water which refers to Water Baptism. Are you decided to be Born – Again ? Rev 3:20 , ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me’. Are you ready to be part of His Church.
