A study of pollen grains preserved in lake sediment can tell what kinds of plants were growing in the landscape around the lake, which, in turn, tell us about the climate of the region when those plants were alive. By pollen assemblage, we mean the number of various taxa of plants such as trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, and aquatic plants, and their relative abundance. Look at the simplified pollen diagram (from sediment cored from a lake in the Lower 48) shown below and interpret possible histories (climate, environment, human) of the region from CE 1600 to 2020.
