Sarmale is a Romanian traditional dish,
traditionally served on Christmas and New
Year’s Eve, but also served throughout the
year at weddings, baptism parties, and other
large celebrations. It is one of the best food
specific to Romania.
The way this food is prepared is a real
ritual for the Romanians. Ground pork is
mixed with sauteed caramelized onions and
rice stuffed in a cabbage leaf or grape leaf.
For flavor, they are usually arranged into
layers with smoked pork fat, smoked ribs, or
smoked sausages put between the layers.
It is usually served with sour cream and
polenta.
However, the taste of the sarmale is so
good, that you will not be able to stop eating
them.
