6. The title of the magazine;
• Foundations; is the basis of pop, and an album
title of Kate Nash. I came up with about 10
different names with had some sort of related
to pop, and I decided on the one which I liked
the best. I used the conventions from the title
which had ‘O’s ‘D’s and ‘A’s in so I could
develop the idea from the magazine Billboard
and colour in the letters.
7. Graphology/page layouts;
• I have used the F model for my magazine. If you
look at a lot of the billboard magazine covers
they’re F models. I wanted to challenge the
conventions and have the writing just down one
side of the page. Also magazines like seventeen
and topofthepops layout their front covers with
the F model. All of these magazines have the
convention of masthead covering the top third of
the page. Its either in front of the artist on the
front of behind them.
8. Costumes, props, iconography used to
reflect genre;
• For the first photo shoot I did, the
costumes which I had picked were
not poppy enough for the genre of
my magazine.
• I reflected on this for the second photo shot I did
by selecting three outfits I thought you’d find in a
pop magazine. I didn’t feel the need for the use
of props in my magazine as I couldn’t think of
anything to have which suited the genre.
9. Camerawork and framing of images;
• Whilst preparing for my photo shot I set up a room, with two lights and a white
screen to make the photos look clean and light. The camera was at eye level, to
make my artist look normal and be represented so they appear nor stronger or
weaker to my audience readers.
• As I have two front covers, I used one with a closer shot from the chest up and the
other one from the hips up. I took a selection of different shots for my front cover,
close up shots and longer shots with her whole body in. I found that close up shots
worked better because I wanted my title ‘Foundations’ to be over their forehead.
For my contents page I liked the idea of having a full body shot; one because you’d
get to see the whole outfit, and two because I wanted my artist to be in an action
shot. I wouldn’t of been able to achieve this if I was to do a close up shot of just
her face.
I originally wanted my artist for the double page spread to be blowing a kiss, but I
changed my mind and asked for her to look all sweet and smiley. I used the typical
hands of the hip photo for my double page spread, with her wearing a sweet
summer dress.
10. Title, article, header etc font and style;
• The font throughout my magazine has almost
stayed the same. I used the font ‘Times’ for
most of my headings and for my article on my
double page spread. I found that this font was
easy to read. I looked at different articles in
pop magazines and took some inspiration
from them. As I like pop music myself I also
asked questions which I’d like my favourite
artist to answer themselves.
11. Genre and how the magazine cover,
contents and spread suggest it.
• The genre of my magazine is pop. This is shown on the front cover as I’ve used
bright colours, e.g. Pink and yellow. Also the outfit my artist is wearing. My artists
look pretty and sweet on the front cover, and just by looking at the front cover you
can tell that it isn’t a rock magazine. The pull quote I used “it feels like one big
dream” gives the genre of the magazine away, as you wouldn’t find a rock or
mental artist say that. The cover lines and stories down the side of the page have
big pop artist names in like Ed Sheeran, One Direction, The Wanted etc.
My contents also has bright colours on, with the title ‘Contents’ in pink. I used
pictures of Little Mix and James Arthur who are also artist that are currently in the
Hit 40 UK charts, which again suggest my magazines genre; pop. My magazine
features pop artists like One Direction, Little Mix, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, showing
the genre of my magazine.
My double page spread title is “Little Miss Perfect” taking the name from Little Mix
and how a lot of pop artist looks in magazines “Perfect” and put it into the title for
my magazine double page spread. The title suggests that it is pop genre, as again
you wouldn’t find a double page spread title in a magazine of rock or heavy
mental.
My magazine suggests that the genre is pop by the pictures, my artists and the
colour schemes.
12. How your artists are represented;
• My artist is represented as a sweet and pretty
character through the pictures which I used
for my magazine. Also the way I have dressed
my artist shows that she’s quite an outgoing
character and you can straight away see that
she is a pop artist by the way she is dressed.
On most of the pictures throughout the
magazine she is smiling, which shows she’s a
very happy girl.
13. Colour Scheme;
• My colour scheme stays the same throughout my
magazine, I’ve taken the pink I’ve used to fill in
the letter O, for my content page title, the front
cover, content page writing and for the questions
on my double page spread. I’ve also used the
blue from the letter D in the title for the pull
quote on the and for the writing on the front
cover.
My front cover, contents and double page spread
don’t have any dull colours on it, they’re all bright
colours which stand out.
14. Conclusion;
• After looking at other magazines which are
the same music genre as mine has helped me
develop ideas and help me complete my final
magazine. Looking at what conventions other
pop magazines use, its helped me create my
magazine. As before when we did our
preliminary work I didn’t use many
conventions and after research and planning
idea’s I’ve used a wide range of conventions
for my final magazine.
