OFFERING THE WORLD IN ONE CITY
安特卫普以诸多美食出名，这其中尤为引人注目的
是：安特卫普小手饼干。这种手形饼干从1934年就开
始出现了，但是这个小小的饼干代表的可远不止那些
饼干。
安特卫普小手饼干还代表着，比如说，安特卫普
这个名字的来历。按照民间传说，年轻的英雄—布拉
博从贪婪的巨人安蒂公手中解放了这座城市。英雄在
一场战斗中打败了巨人，并且将巨人的手切了扔到斯
凯尔特河里。所以，就有了Antwerpen（安特卫普，荷

The city of Antwerp is known for many culinary delights.
One stands out in particular: the Antwerp hand, a hand-shaped
biscuit that has been around since 1934. But this
little cookie represents more than meets the eye...
The Antwerp hand symbolises, for instance,
the founding of Antwerp. According to folklore, the young
hero Brabo freed the city of the greedy giant Antigoon,
defeating hime in battle and throwing his hand into the
river Scheldt. Hence the name Antwerpen (as it is written
in Dutch), derived from the old local words for hand
(‘ant’) and throw (‘wearpan’).
Of course as we know, legends are rarely true…
But with a little imagination, you could say that the
Antwerp hand is a symbol that represents the entire
city. Just like the ideal, small cookie, Antwerp has all the
ingredients that make a modern metropolis, and they’re
all close at hand.
With its location in the heart of Europe, on the
banks of the river Scheldt, Antwerp is the ideal hub
for successful business, offering an international port,
excellent industrial and logistics infrastructure, and a
thriving creative and start-up scene. No wonder that
Antwerp gradually developed into one of the biggest
ports around the globe, as well as the world’s leading
diamond centre and a trendsetting fashion capital.
Antwerp is ‘open for business’ in every meaning of the
word: from the academic world, over entrepreneurship,
to local governmental support.
But Antwerp has more to offer than just business.
Often praised for its rich history, the city also has a range

hall finished with marble, glass and gold... This is not

Located in the centre of Europe and home to
about 514,432 inhabitants(*), Antwerp combines the

5. #1: A driver of Belgian and European economic growth
Belgium and Antwerp are drivers of economic growth
in several cutting-edge industries, such as IT and
chemistry. In 2013, Belgium had a gross domestic
product (GDP) of 382.7 billion euros and a GDP per capita
of 34,500 euros. What’s more, in terms of purchasing
power parities, the Belgian GDP per capita is about 20%
higher than the European Union average.
Within Belgium, Antwerp definitely stands out: in
2011, the Province of Antwerp had a GDP per capita
of 38,900 euros, while the GDP per capita for the
Arrondissement of Antwerp reached 42,200 euros.
In terms of purchasing power parities, the GDP per capita
of the latter surpasses the EU average by a staggering
51%, making it not only a key economic driver for the
whole country, but also for the entire continent.

An economic hub:
the ideal backdrop for business
With its unique central location along the banks of the Scheldt river, Antwerp offers
excellent connectivity to both the North Sea and the continental mainland. The city opens
a gateway toward all major consumer centres, with no less than 60% of Europe’s total
purchasing power within a 500 km radius. But that’s not the only reason why business
thrives so well in Antwerp.

#2: A fertile climate for foreign investments
Belgium is one of Europe’s leading nations when it
comes to attracting investments from abroad.
In 2013 alone, foreign companies ploughed a staggering
13.9 billion euros into the region and initiated 175
investment projects, 118 of which were greenfield
investments. With 45 projects, nine more than the year
before, Antwerp as a province indisputably lies at the

One of the main drivers for this skyrocketing trend
is the notional interest deduction. This innovative
tax incentive allows companies to deduct a fictitious
interest from their taxable income, based on their
shareholders’ equity. This levels out the differences
between funding with equity and funding with loans,
and is especially interesting to shelter income from
operational activities.
#3: From a petrochemicals cluster to diamond centre
With a portfolio of 300 different chemicals, the Port of
Antwerp is the primary backbone of Europe’s largest
petrochemicals cluster, as well as the most diverse one
around the globe. It’s no surprise that ten out of the
world’s top 20 chemicals firms chose to set up a base
in Antwerp. The city is also globally renowned for its
leading diamond and fashion industry. These creative
sectors reap the benefits of Antwerp’s dynamism:
a place where culture resonates with opportunity.
#4: A vibrant Start-up City
The City of Antwerp has a vibrant start-up scene,
where multiple incubators help new companies and
innovative entrepreneurs find venture capital.
What’s more, several local governmental initiatives
exist to support start-ups by providing affordable office
space and expert business advice. Start-ups in Antwerp
also benefit from an ideal testing ground for their
innovative ideas, providing companies with valuable
feedback before they head to the international stage.
#5: A unique MeetCentive
Not only does Antwerp offer affordable office space
(145 euros per square metre annually), the city also
boasts a myriad of locations for meetings, conferences
and exhibitions. Supported by Antwerp Tourism &
Conventions (ATC), for instance, you can find the perfect
MeetCentive for your business in no time: from the grand
Antwerp Expo and Lotto Arena to cultural settings such
as the MAS museum and the historic Sint-Felixpakhuis
warehouse.
#6: All the space you need
Antwerp in square metres? That’s a lot of room for
business opportunities.
• 1.9 million m2 of office space, and counting.
An additional 300,000 square metres of high-quality
office space will be constructed by the end of 2018.
• 66.5 million m2 of industrial terrain, an exceptionally
large industry zone. Most of these sites are located
at the Port of Antwerp.
• 18.9 million m2 of industrial terrains within the city.
These areas support the growing entrepreneurial
activity in Antwerp, and the city is currently
developing a range of new business zones such as
Blue Gate Antwerp.

A close-knit road network
Need to take a stroll outside of the Antwerp’s city walls
after a hard day’s work? A system of several regional
motorways connects Antwerp to Belgium’s most
prominent cities. Moreover, the city lies at a crossroads
of no fewer than five major international motorways,
directly connecting Antwerp to France, the Netherlands
and Germany.
Antwerp Central Station: Europe within arm’s reach
Antwerp Central Station allows you to go on a business
trip to Europe’s leading capitals. The high-speed train
connection puts major cities — in France, the Netherlands,
Germany and the UK — within easy reach, and assures fast
connections to all major nearby airports.
International airports
In the mood for a lucrative business trip to New York,
Tel Aviv or Moscow? Thanks to nearby airports,
Antwerp does not only put Europe at your feet,
it connects you to the entire world. From Antwerp
Airport — just fifteen minutes from the historic city
centre — you can take a direct flight to London and
various other destinations. Short check-in times and
excellent location ensure you’ll get there in no time:
you’ll be in London in just one hour.
What’s more, Antwerp is just a stone’s throw from
Brussels Airport, Belgium’s largest international airport.
From there, after a thirty-minute train journey, you can
join the 19 million passengers who take a trip to one of
more than 200 direct destinations every year.

‘Little Island’: a wave of urban renewal
North of Antwerp’s historic centre, the maritime
district ‘Eilandje’ has been transformed into a
lively neighbourhood with hip lounge bars, cafés
and restaurants. At the heart of this ‘Little Island’,
you’ll find the MAS museum, a stunning piece of
architecture. Home to various collections, it records
the history and ethnography of Antwerp. Then there is
the Red Star Line Museum, which tells the story of the
legendary Red Star Line ship company and retraces the
footsteps of its passengers heading for America. Finally,
at the recently renovated Sint-Felixpakhuis, you’ll

The name Antwerp goes as far as 726 AD, around the
same time as the Tang Dynasty in China. According to
folklore, the city got its name from a legend involving
a mythical giant called Druon Antigoon, who lived near
the river Scheldt and exacted a toll from passengers
crossing the river.
After a fearsome battle, the greedy giant was slain
by a young hero named Brabo, who cut off Antigoon’s
hand and flung it into the Scheldt. Hence — according
to legend at least — the city’s Dutch name ‘Antwerpen’,
presumably derived from the local words for hand (‘ant’)
and throw (‘wearpan’). Today, this remarkable myth is
celebrated by a statue in front of the Town Hall and a
delicious hand-shaped pastry called ‘Antwerps handje’
or ‘Antwerp hand’.
Ever since its founding, Antwerp has played a
leading role in various chapters of European history.
This reflects in the city’s beautiful Baroque architecture
and paintings for example, with Peter Paul Rubens as
its most famous ambassador. Today, Rubens’s spirit
lives on in the modern Antwerper, and in the way they
continue to shape the city as a centre of creativity and
entrepreneurial spirit.

Thanks to its young and highly educated population,
Antwerp is an ideal breeding ground for start-ups and
spin-offs, with IT, design, fashion, advertising and

the city council offers every innovative and creative
business idea all the support it needs. The result?
In 2011, Antwerp boasted nearly 8,000 creative
companies — that’s about one in six of the city’s total
number of companies! — employing no fewer than
17,000 people in 2013.
Shoppers’ paradise
Antwerp is the most popular shopping city in Belgium.
The city’s busiest shopping street — the Meir — sees
no less than 10,000 passers-by per hour on any given
Saturday. Additionally, Antwerp is home to a number of
established and up-coming designers and addresses a
variety of shopping opportunities ranging from high-end
fashion and international luxury brands to mainstream.
New shopping trends, shop formulas and fashion
lines generate significant pull among consumers,

Centuries of culture, thousands of ideas
Antwerp has been a powerful cultural magnet for
centuries. Many famous painters, sculptors, instrument
makers and printers were born and lived in the city:
Rubens, Jordaens, Van Dyck and Jan Breughel II
(the Younger) just to name a few. Their cultural legacy
continues to this very day. Antwerp’s creative scene is
steaming with artistic life, hosting a wide variety of

houses include the Flemish Opera, the international Art

thanks to Antwerp’s port, which turned the city

A walk down memory lane
Fancy taking a stroll first to whet the appetite? In the
Old Town, sometimes it feels like time has come to a
standstill: Het Steen, the oldest building in Antwerp,
is the perfect starting point for a walk back in time.
The first stones of this former castle date back as far
as the ninth century. Afterwards, it served as a prison,
sawmill, fish store and museum. From there, it’s only a
stone’s throw to Het Vleeshuis, one of Antwerp’s former
gild houses with a typical richly decorated facade. It was
built originally around 1500 (at the time of the Ming
dynasty) as a place where merchants could sell their
meat products and other specialties. Next, the City Hall
and the Cathedral of Our Lady make for great waypoints
before you step into the idyllic Vlaaikensgang: a labyrinth
of small alleys where the medieval shoemakers used to
live. But that’s enough sightseeing for now. Let’s find a

At home abroad: Chinatown
Across the majestic Central Station, lies Chinatown.
This districts houses the largest Chinese shopping area of
Belgium. It was created in the second half of the 1970s,
after several Chinese supermarkets and restaurants
opened at the same time, and expanded fast in the 80s
and 90s. The neighbourhood is easy to recognise by its
colourful pagoda gate and two marble lions at either end
of the street, protecting the residents.
The restaurants here serve real Chinese dishes,
making them very popular among Antwerp’s Asian
population and all foodies alike!

A passion for eating and drinking

Who would ever have thought that something as
tiny as a scaif — a polishing wheel infused with olive
oil and diamond dust — could turn a city from a
diamond in the rough into a thriving hub for diamond
trading? When Lodewyk van Berken, a stone polisher
from Antwerp, invented his trailblazing tool in the
fifteenth century, it triggered a wave of innovation
for the diamond industry. Soon, skilled craftsmen and
aristocratic buyers from all over Europe found their way
to the city.
Today, Antwerp still remains the world’s indisputable
trading centre for rough and cut diamonds. But the
city’s creative industry didn’t rest on its laurels...
In the 1980s, the ‘Antwerp Six’ — six Antwerp Fashion
Academy graduates, including Dries van Noten,
Ann Demeulemeester and Dirk Bikkembergs — set off
to London to showcase their idiosyncratic designs,
making headline upon headline. Fashion and Antwerp
have often been unavoidably mentioned in the same
breath ever since. And as unique concept stores,
boutiques and shopping areas popped up like daisies,
Antwerp gradually grew to become the fashion capital it
is today.

The first record of trading diamonds on Antwerp soil dates back as far as 1447. Antwerp
soon transformed into the world’s leading hub for diamond trading and manufacturing
— a lucrative business now just as it was then. Profiting from five centuries of tradition,
Antwerp maintains its leading position in the diamond industry to this very day, thanks to
its unmatched creativity and innovation. Meanwhile, other creative sectors — especially

A walk down the Square Mile
Antwerp’s Diamond District is home to over 2,000
diamond and jewellery companies, as well as four of
the world’s 30 Diamond Exchanges, all within a single
square mile. With the Diamond Office customs at its
core, the aptly named Square Mile offers unique and
transparent trade infrastructure for the industry.
No wonder that 84% of all the world’s rough diamonds
and about 50% of their polished counterparts have once
been traded in Antwerp.

Antwerp has set itself high standards across the board,
and the diamond industry is no exception. The Antwerp
World Diamond Centre — in cooperation with the
City of Antwerp — are sworn to only certify the very
best jewellers in the city with the ‘Antwerp’s Most

In 2013, completing its second-best ever year, the
Antwerp diamond industry once again confirmed its
leading position. That year, Antwerp’s total diamond
trade value amounted to a staggering 55 billion US
dollars, flirting with 2011’s all-time record of 56.6 billion
US dollars. The city’s long-term strategy to actively
expand the industry’s scope worldwide is the main
reason behind these excellent results, which attract
businesses from all over the world.

The fashion factory: from designer to retailer
Over 20,000 people work in Belgium’s fashion industry,
which generates more than seven billion euros every
year. Antwerp holds the absolute top position within the
country, thanks to the renowned fashion department of
its Royal Academy of Fine Arts. But that’s not the only
reason why the city manages to attract retail chains and
top fashion houses from all over the globe!
In addition to its strategic location near Europe’s
main fashion capitals, Antwerp’s ideal test market
conditions and affordable office space are another
reason why almost 50% of all retailers in Belgium

Antwerp continues to invest heavily in its shopping

Vandevorst presented a pair of breath-taking diamond
ankle boots at the Business of Design Week in Hong
Kong. Bejewelled with no fewer than 39,083 coloured
diamonds and valued at over 3.2 million US dollars,
this unique project brought together Antwerp’s main
creative assets — diamonds and fashion — as well as
other stars, such as the Flanders Fashion Institute,
the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and one of
Antwerp’s leading diamond dealers, Diarough.

Take a page out of the book of the Antwerp humanist,
printer, and publisher Christopher Plantin.
A contemporary of Rubens and a man who truly knew
how to market his printing office, Plantin changed
the face of communication forever with his famous
printing press. In 1555, his company had sixteen presses
and over eighty employees, making it one of Europe’s
biggest printing offices. Being a walking encyclopaedia
himself, Plantin’s success was based on a constant strive
for ideas and innovation.
Today, Antwerp is home to Belgium’s fastest-growing
university, with various internationally renowned
colleges, as well as dozens of business incubators,
knowledge centres and competence centres. All of these
cooperate closely with the rest of the Antwerp economy.

Education on an international level
Antwerp offers plenty of unique and international
educations that attract students from all over the world:
• The Maritime Academy offers parallel training in
both Dutch and French, and hosts students from 26
different countries. 38% of its student population
comes from abroad.
• For 60 years, the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp
has been producing and graduating exceptional,
award-winning, classical and contemporary ballet
dancers who went on to work for companies such
as the Bolshoï, the Royal Ballet of England and the
American Ballet Theatre.
• The Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of
Fine Arts is considered one of the most important
and influential fashion schools in the world.
Among its graduates are world-renowned
fashion designers such as Dries Van Noten,
Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Bikkembergs and
Walter Van Beirendonck.
• The Institute of Tropical Medicine is one of the
world’s most important institutions for education,
research and assistance in tropical medicine, as well
as healthcare in developing countries. Picking out
one achievement: a solid part of the foundation of
the current worldwide research on AIDS and the HIV
virus was laid in Antwerp.
• The Antwerp Management School is listed in
the Financial Times Ranking. With its education
programme ‘Master of Global Management’,
the institution continues to strengthen its position
among leading management schools worldwide.
Antwerp and Shanghai: learning from each other
Shanghai and Antwerp are benefitting from one
another’s knowledge and expertise in a number of ways.
There are a good number of projects to promote this
fruitful exchange:
• For a couple of years now, the prestigious China
Executive Leadership Academy in Pudong (CELAP)
and the Antwerp Management School (AMS) have
been working together on their management
training programmes.
• The Fudan University and the faculty of Applied
Economics at the University of Antwerp have set up
a student exchange programme.
• Marc Van Peel, the Antwerp alderman of ports,
and Jan van der Borght, Antwerp port representative
in Shanghai, are visiting professors at the Shanghai
Maritime University.
• Together with colleges in Shanghai and two other
European cities, the Antwerp Management School
organises a one-year Master in China-Europe
Business Studies for students from all over the world.
Antwerp has four international schools specifically
for the children of expatriates. They offer high-quality
education paths from kindergarten up to
and including a high school diploma, which offers
access to the world’s top universities.

ANTWERP AND SHANGHAI:
A LONG-TERM FRIENDSHIP
中国和安特卫普的之间的关系由来已久。早在1957
年，比利时-中国协会就已经建立，时任安特卫普市
长的卡米勒·胡斯曼（Camille Huysmans）提出此项建
议。安特卫普是世界上第一批与中华人民共和国建立
友好关系的城市之一，在新中国成立后的第八年就建

The ties between China and Antwerp go way back
in time. A Belgium-China Association was founded
as early as 1957, at the suggestion of then-mayor
of Antwerp, Camille Huysmans. Antwerp was one of
the first cities in the world to enter into a friendship
agreement with the People’s Republic of China,
only eight years after its founding.
The friendly relations with China grew into a twinning
between the cities of Antwerp and Shanghai. A twinning
agreement — a sign of the great and growing friendship
between these two cities — was signed by M. Wang
Daohan, the then-mayor of Shanghai and Bob Cools,
the then-mayor of Antwerp.
Connections to Shanghai have since been developed
and nurtured. Business contacts are at the core,
and plenty of cultural and educational collaborations
solidify the friendship between the two cities.
It is a friendship that grows stronger by the day.
Antwerp is home to the largest
Chinese community in Belgium.

The Port of Shanghai and APEC (Antwerp Port
Engineering and Consulting) have a professional
partnership that dates back to 1985. The main purpose
is the establishment of friendly port relations and the
planning, construction, management and operation
of both ports. But the collaboration goes a lot further
still: ever since the 1980s, Chinese employees have
come to Antwerp to receive training on various port
functions, provided by APEC. Over 3,000 Chinese ports
and maritime professionals have already been trained
by APEC.

Founded in 1997, China Shipping Container Lines is
a leading container liner service provider. “When we
decided to expand our activities to Europe in 1998,
Antwerp was an obvious landing place,” recalls
Yu Dongsheng, managing director at China Shipping
Agency Belgium.
“At first glance, Antwerp caught our eye because of
its strategic location,” adds Mr. Yu. “The city really is
the capital port of North-West Europe and is the natural
gateway to the continent’s pivotal economic zones.
Gradually, we also discovered various other assets:
Antwerp’s modern port facilities, its dense waterways,
rail and road networks and the availability of affordable
warehousing, just to name a few. In other words:
settling in Antwerp turned out to be a cost-effective
decision for our company.”
China Shipping Agency Belgium has been organizing
weekly transport between Asia and Europe ever since
1999. And its success story keeps getting better!
“A couple of years ago, we decided to expand our
activities in Belgium with a second weekly service,”
adds general manager Jos van Hasselt. “The deepening
of the river Scheldt — allowing our mega-vessels to enter
the port — further convinced us that we’ll be able to do
excellent business in Antwerp in the years to come.”
International Port Group (SIPG) and Ahlers was
founded in 1993. It is involved in a broad range of
logistic and liner shipping operations.
• Duvel Moortgat, brewer of famous beers like Duvel,
La Chouffe and Liefmans, has been bringing Belgian
beers to the Chinese market since 2007.
• Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell provides end-to-end
telecommunication solutions and high-quality
services to customers in China and around the world.
• Agfa-Gevaert has a regional centre of operations in
Shanghai, which is responsible for sales, service and
logistics in China. This imaging group has been active
in the Chinese market since 1985.
• Egemin Automation serves the Chinese and South-
East Asian and Pacific market from two offices in
Shanghai and Hong Kong.
• KBC Bank China provides corporate banking services
to companies in China and companies that do
business with China or Belgium and Central and
Eastern Europe.
More broadly speaking, over 160 Belgian companies
are represented in Shanghai – which is the biggest
concentration of Belgian companies in China.
