This document provides instructions for creating a basic Java application using Eclipse Vert.x including: 1. Setting up the development environment with Java, Maven, and a command line terminal. 2. Generating a Maven project structure with a sample verticle (MyFirstJavaVerticle) using the vertx-maven-plugin. 3. Modifying and running the verticle using "mvn compile vertx:run" and accessing it at http://localhost:8080.

Java First Verticle

2. 01. Prerequisite – Java
a. Java JDK 8 or the latest version of Java
b. Maven 3.3+
c. A command-line terminal (Bash, PowerShell,
etc.)

3. 02. Java first verticle
a. Create a directory called chapter02
b. Then, issue the following command inside
directory chapter02
mvn io.fabric8:vertx-maven-plugin:1.0.5:setup
-DprojectGroupId=io.vertx.chapter02
-DprojectArtifactId=java-vertx-app
-Dverticle=io.vertx.chapter02.MyFirstJavaVerticle
This command generates:
1. The Maven project structure,
2. Configures the vertx-maven-plugin, and
3. Creates a verticle class
(io.vertx.chapter02.MyFirstJavaVerticle),

c. Modify the
src/main/java/io/vertx/chapter02/MyFirstJav
aVerticle.java.
d. Run this application, launch:
mvn compile vertx:run
The vertx:run goal launches the Vert.x application and also watches
code alterations. So,if you edit the source code, the application will
be automatically recompiled and restarted.
f. Browse URL http://localhost:8080/ and look
at the application output.
g. Use Ctrl + C to shut down.

5. 03. Using RxJava
a. In your pom.xml file, add the following
dependency:
<dependency>
<groupId>io.vertx</groupId>
<artifactId>vertx-rx-java</artifactId>
</dependency>
b. Change the <vertx.verticle> property to be
io.vertx.chapter02.MyFirstRxJavaVerticle
This property tells the Vert.x Maven plugin which verticle is the
entry point of the application.
c. Create the new verticle class
(io.vertx.chapter02.MyFirstRxJava
Verticle.java)

6. 04. Packaging App as a Jar
a. Package app as a fat jar, launch:
mvn clean package
b. Run this application, launch:
cd target
java -jar java-vertx-app-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar
c. Browse URL http://localhost:8080/ and look
at the application output.
d. Use Ctrl + C to shut down.
