Have you ever studied any martial arts? There are many to choose from and they come from distant parts of the world.
For example, Tae Kwan Do is the martial art that uses the feet and hands for defense. It originated in Korea. Karate
uses rapid movements and the arms and it comes from China. Judo is also from Asia. It uses the opponent's own
weight and movement to throw him to the ground and immobilize him. It's from Japan. Other countries have also
developed martial arts. In Brazil, slaves from Africa were not allowed to fight, so they developed a martial art
accompanied by music that looks like a dance. Capoeira uses rhythmic motions and controlled kicks. In Europe, the
Greeks practiced both boxing and wrestling. In the last few years, martial arts experts have combined these styles and
there are competitions in which the competitors use techniques from some or all of these martial arts.

Today everyone talks about fusion music. Fusion music refers to a mixture of different genres of music from different
places in the world. For example, the Colombian, Andrea Echeverri, mixes alternative rock and traditional Colombian
music and Ex-Centric Sound System from the U.S. mixes hip-hop, funk, West African, and Caribbean music.
Music fusion isn't new. In fact rock music is a result of fusing various different genres of music. Rock music developed
in the 1950s from rock & roll, but it has its roots in many other kinds of music. One influence of rock music is Rhythm
and Blues (R & B), an African-American music genre of the 1940s which has its roots in blues and jazz. These types of
music began in the early 20th century in the African-American communities in the South of the U.S. They are a mixture
of African and European music traditions.
Another kind of music that influenced rock music is country music which also developed in the south of the U.S., but
among the white communities. Rock stars like Elvis Presley started as country singers. Country music has its roots in
American Folk music, which originated from the English and Irish immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries.
This just shows that no music is original. It is all a result of the fusion of existing genres.
(1) Andrea Echeverri is a rock singer. T F
(2) Country music originated in the white communities in the south of the U.S. T F
(3) Folk music didn't influence rock music. T F
