2. Unit pricing means displaying the price of grocery items
for a certain unit of measurement in addition to the items’
selling price.
Large grocery retailers must display a unit price on labels
and in advertising where a selling price is displayed.
This makes it easy for you to compare the price and value
of similar types of products when shopping for groceries.
Unit pricing calculates for you what is better value
3. Ex 1:For example, if a 12-
ounce can of corn costs 69¢,
the rate is 69¢ for 12 ounces.
The first term of the ratio is
measured in cents; the second
term in ounces. You can write
this rate as 69¢/12 ounces or
69¢:12 ounces. Both
expressions mean that you pay
69¢ "for every" 12 ounces of
corn.
4. Ex 2:for example, a 2.5 liter
container of laundry detergent
costs $7.62 or a 1.5 liter
container costing $5.74.
Price label 1: Laundry
detergent X 2.5L $7.62 = $3.05
per liter
Price label 2: Laundry
detergent Y 1.5L $5.74 = $3.83
per liter
You can see that the unit price
of $3.05 per liter for brand X is
better value than brand Y at a
unit price of $3.83 per liter
because it cost more but gives
you more detergent.
5. Ex 3:For example, if you want to
buy frozen orange juice you
may find a 6-ounce can that
cost $.64. The unit price for this
small can is $3.42 per quart. A
12-ounce can of frozen orange
juice in another brand may cost
$.89. The unit price for the
larger container of juice is listed
as $2.38 per quart. Here, the
larger container is cheaper per
quart.
6. Ex 3: What is best
2 liters of Milk at $3.80, or
1.5 liters of Milk at $2.70 ?
In this case the "Unit" is 1
liter, and the Unit Prices are:
$3.80 / 2 liters = $1.90 per
liter
$2.70 / 1.5 liters = $1.80 per
liter
So the lowest Unit Price
(and the best bargain) is 1.5
liters at $2.70.
