“The best part of my job
is knowing we’re keeping
children safe while helping
their parents get services that
will keep their family together.”
– Felicia Huguley, Child Care Worker.
Our Goals
• Provide prompt relief for parents/
caregivers and a safe place for children
whose parents are in crisis.
• Identify the parents’ concerns so that
appropriate intervention can be planned
and implemented.
• Guide parents in how to idenfity family
and community resources that are
a good match in assisting them in
achieving desired goals.
• Identify any medical and developmental
issues during the child’s stay in the Crisis
Nursery.
• Help parents recognize when they are
in crisis and in danger of harming their
children, so they can act accordingly in
reaching out for help.
• Develop a cooperative child-oriented
team effort with staff that is empathetic,
caring, and non-judgmental.
The Maria Lucadamo
Crisis Nursery
The Maria Lucadamo Crisis Nursery and
Family Center, located at The New York
Foundling’s Manhattan headquarters,
serves as an “island of safety” for children
who are at risk of abuse or neglect. The
Nursery is a free and voluntary respite
and preventive program that provides a
temporary safe place for children, ages
0-10, whose parents are in crisis and
cannot properly care for them.
“Sometimes just knowing
there’s somebody to call
when you’re overwhelmed.
That helps a lot.”
– Dayann, who brought her two children
to the Nursery when her husband was
ill and couldn’t care for them during
the birth of their third child.
