4. “Rather than love, than money, than
fame, give me truth.”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image and what it represents
because rather than striving in life to
accumulate more money, the goal of
corporate America, he instead strives
to accumulate more knowledge. He
believes that this system corrupts the
way of life and obscures the truth
because nobody cares enough about
it to attempt to discover it.

7. “Books are the treasured wealth of
the world and the fit inheritance of
generations and nations.”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image because it represents the new
generations becoming too self
absorbed to bother reading and
learning about the past. This image
represents the knowledge being lost
because of affluenza’s effects on
what the new generations believe are
trendy and cool.

10. “Live in each season as it passes;
breathe the air, drink the drink, taste
the fruit, and resign yourself to the
influence of the earth.”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image because the owners are using
vast amounts of money and
resources to attempt to emulate the
season of summer inside their house
while winter rages outside. By doing
this they are taking more from the
world than they need. The owners
should experience winter for what it is
and appreciate the earth's beauty.

13. “The cost of a thing is the amount of
what I will call life which is required to
be exchanged for it, immediately or in
the long run.”
Thoreau would disagree with the
establishment of coal burning power
plants because they have detrimental
environmental consequences even
though they provide momentary
heat/electricity. They cost the
environment more later on because of
the greed of the public which would
rather use more energy now rather
than have sustainable energy forever.

16. “Every generation laughs at the old
fashions, but follows religiously the
new.”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image of a hipster because it is a self-
absorbed fashion trend which
disregards old trends. He believes
that they do not have enough
appreciation for the past and that they
are in essence losing the truth of life
for shallow fads.

19. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet
desperation.”
Thoreau would disagree with the work
eithic of this desperate working man,
who is only working in order to gain
material possessions and keep
himself afloat. Thoreau would want
this man to give up his desperation
and do simple tasks needed to
survive while enjoying himself and
natures beauty.

22. “I say, beware of all enterprises that
require new clothes, and not rather a
new wearer of clothes.”
Thoreau would disagree with the
affluent spending of money for
material possessions in this image.
He believes that the people should
only have what they need and that
people who do not do so are being
consumed by society's greed.

25. “My greatest skill in life has been to
want but little”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image because it represents the
greed of our current American culture,
which requires an obscene amount of
money and resources. He would
rather want Americans to spend as
little as they need and destroy the
conspicuous consumption that
plagues us.

28. “As long as possible live free and
uncommitted.”
Thoreau would disagree with this with
this image because it shows a person
who is being imprisoned because
they chose to seek pleasures outside
of what is necessary and did it by
putting others at risk. Thoreau would
want the men to focus more on the
beauty of the world around them,
clean from the corruption of
materialistic pleasures.

warmth, or comfort, first of physical
warmth, then the warmth of the
affections.”
Thoreau would disagree with these
images because they show cold and
sterile architecture that was created
for human aesthetic pleasure, rather
than for function. He would want the
home to be a place that was
functional and nothing more in order
to preserve himself against the
influences of a materialistic society.

aim at.”
Thoreau would disagree with this
image because it shows young
people who are more absorbed in
how they will fare in the future and
live to society’s expectations rather
than aim to personally better
themselves.

37. “If we respected only what is
inevitable and has a right to be, music
and poetry would resound along the
streets.”
Thoreau would disagree with these
images because they show people
becoming so absorbed with society
and its constructs that they cease to
play music or pay attention to each
other, and instead fill the streets with
the sounds of their cellphones.
